Answering: number, unit, adjective
The number comes first in its attributive form (lesson 23), then the unit, which never takes a plural ending, then the adjective if you want it.
Арван хоёр метр гүн.ten two metre deep"Twelve metres deep."
Эндээс хорин гурван километр.here-ABL twenty three kilometre"Twenty-three kilometres from here."
Энэ хувин арван кило жинтэй.this bucket ten kilo weight-COM"This bucket weighs ten kilos."
For weight, Mongolian says жинтэй, "having a weight of": жин is weight.
From … to …: –аас … хүртэл
Put the starting point in the ablative and хүртэл (up to, as far as) after the end point.
Улаанбаатараас Хархорин хүртэл гурван зуу гаруй километр."From Ulaanbaatar to Kharkhorin it is over three hundred kilometres."
Эндээс худаг хүртэл хагас цаг."From here to the well it's half an hour."
About, and more than: орчим, гаруй
- орчим after a number: "about". хагас цаг орчим (about half an hour), арван литр орчим (about ten litres).
- гаруй after a round number: "more than". зуу гаруй километр (over a hundred kilometres), гурван зуу гаруй (over three hundred).
The units
| Mongolian | English |
|---|
| километр (км) | kilometre |
| метр (м) | metre |
| сантиметр (см) | centimetre |
| кило, килограмм (кг) | kilo, kilogram |
| литр (л) | litre |
Mongolia uses the metric system, with the international words. The genitive works as usual: арван литрийн хувин is "a ten-litre bucket".
