1Limba’s diary

LIMBA

Stars over the Gobi

Our last night in the Gobi. No town for many kilometres, no clouds, and no moon until late. I have never seen so many stars. Tuyaa lay on the sand next to me and showed me the sky the Mongolian way: the Golden Stake, the Seven Gods, the Seam of the Sky.

Then a camel groaned somewhere in the dark, and Bold told us an old story: why the camel has no year in the Mongolian calendar.

2Dialogue

Limba
So many stars! I've never seen a sky like this.
In the city there's a lot of light, so you see few stars. The Gobi is dark.
Limba
What's that bright star?
It's called the Golden Stake.
Limba
Why is it called a stake?
That star doesn't move. The other stars turn around it.
Those seven stars are called the Seven Gods. My grandmother offers milk to them.
Limba
And that white band? Is it a cloud?
No, it's the Seam of the Sky. It looks as if the sky had been sewn together.
Look! The moon is rising. How big and red it is!
It's nice to tell stories on a night like this. Do you know the tale of the camel and the mouse?
Limba
I don't. Tell us!

The night sky

MongolianEnglish
тэнгэрsky; also Heaven in the old beliefs

сарmoon (and month)

харанхуйdark; darkness
тодbright, clear

The sky has its own verbs: сар гарах (the moon comes out, rises), нар мандах (the sun rises), нар жаргах (the sun sets). Гарах is the everyday verb "to go out, to come out"; мандах and жаргах are mostly said of the sun.

Naming: X-ийг Y гэдэг

Star names are given with гэдэг (lesson 124): the thing named goes in the accusative, then the name, then гэдэг.

Тэр одыг Алтан гадас гэдэг.that star-ACC golden stake say-HAB"That star is called the Golden Stake."

A legend, told in –жээ

Folk tales use the past of things nobody listening has witnessed, –жээ (lesson 136). Here is Bold's story, line by line.

Long ago the camel and the mouse had an argument.
Which of them would begin the cycle of twelve years?
They agreed: "Whoever sees the morning sunlight first, wins."
The mouse climbed onto the camel's hump and saw the sunlight first.
That is why there is a Year of the Mouse, but no Year of the Camel.
And they say camels still roll in the ashes.

The story itself is in –жээ: маргалджээ (argued), тохиролцжээ (agreed), харжээ (saw). The last two lines speak about today, so they use байдаг and гэдэг. People say that the camel rolls in the ashes to crush the mouse that cheated it.

5Good to know

Many Mongolian families honour the seven stars of Долоон бурхан by sprinkling milk towards them, as a wish for good fortune. Алтан гадас, the Pole Star, has long shown herders and travellers where north is. And the twelve-year animal calendar, with its Year of the Mouse, the Ox, the Tiger and the others, is still used to name the years.
