1Limba’s diary

LIMBA

Bold has the car repaired

August, and the Gobi trip is three days away. Bold's car is not ready: the engine makes a noise like an angry camel. Bold does not repair it himself, of course. He has it repaired by a friend at a garage behind the market, and then he has it washed, which Nomin thinks is pointless before a week of dust.

While we waited, Nomin and I had our hair cut. In Mongolian I did not "cut my hair": I made it be cut, тайруулсан. One small suffix, and someone else does the work.

2Dialogue

Limba
Таны машин яасан бэ?What's wrong with your car?
Болд
Хөдөлгүүр нь муу дуу гаргаж байна. Өнөөдөр засуулна.The engine is making a bad noise. I'll have it repaired today.
Limba
Өөрөө засахгүй юу?Won't you repair it yourself?
Болд
Үгүй. Миний найз сайн засварчин. Би үргэлж түүгээр засуулдаг.No. My friend is a good mechanic. I always have it repaired by him.
Номин
Хэр удах вэ? Бид гурван хоногийн дараа явна шүү дээ.How long will it take? We're leaving in three days, you know.
Болд
Гурван цаг орчим. Дараа нь машинаа угаалгана.About three hours. After that I'll have the car washed.
Номин
Угаалгах уу? Говьд тоос их шүү дээ!Have it washed? There's so much dust in the Gobi!
Болд
Цэвэрхэн машинтай явах сайхан.It's nice to travel in a clean car.
Limba
Тэгвэл бид энэ хооронд үсээ тайруулъя. Говьд үсчин байхгүй байх.Then in the meantime let's get our hair cut. There probably won't be a hairdresser in the Gobi.
Номин
Сайн санаа. Ээж надад "Үсээ тайруул" гэж хэлсэн.Good idea. Mum told me to get my hair cut.
Болд
За. Гурван цагийн дараа энд уулзъя. Битгий хүлээлгээрэй!All right. Let's meet here in three hours. Don't keep me waiting!
Limba
Хүлээлгэсэнд уучлаарай! Үсчин удаан байлаа.Sorry to have kept you waiting! The hairdresser was slow.
Болд
Зүгээр. Машин бэлэн боллоо. Хөдөлгүүрийг нь засуулж, машинаа угаалгасан.No problem. The car is ready. I had the engine repaired and the car washed.
Номин
Ямар цэвэрхэн юм бэ! Хоёр хоногийн дараа ийм цэвэрхэн байхгүй дээ.How clean it is! In two days it won't be this clean.

4Grammar and explanations

Doing it, or having it done

English says "Bold repairs the car" and "Bold has the car repaired": the second needs an extra verb, "have". Mongolian keeps one verb and slips a suffix in between the stem and the ending. This suffix is the causative: the subject does not do the action but makes, has or lets someone else do it.

Болд машинаа засна.Bold car-REFL repair-PRES-FUT"Bold repairs his car."
Болд машинаа засуулна.Bold car-REFL repair-CAUS-PRES-FUT"Bold has his car repaired."

Three shapes

After the stemSuffixExamples
a consonant–уул– / –үүл–засах → засуулах, тайрах → тайруулах, үзэх → үзүүлэх (to show)
a long vowel or a diphthong–лга– / –лгэ–угаах → угаалгах, хүлээх → хүлээлгэх, уух → уулгах (to give a drink)
a few old verbs–га– / –гэ–гарах → гаргах (to take out), хүрэх → хүргэх (to take someone somewhere)

Only the first two are living patterns. Learn the verbs in –га– as words of their own, and never build a causative you have not met: a guess may give a word that does not exist.

Who does the work: the instrumental

The person who actually does the job stands in the instrumental, the case of автобусаар (by bus):

Би түүгээр засуулдаг.I he-INS repair-CAUS-HAB"I have it repaired by him."
Номин найзаараа үсээ тайруулсан.Nomin friend-INS-REFL hair-REFL cut-CAUS-PAST"Nomin had her hair cut by her friend."

A causative is a complete verb

Once the suffix is in place, the new verb takes every ending you know, and the ending follows the vowel of the suffix: - засуулна (will have repaired), засуулсан (had repaired), засуулъя (let's have it repaired), засуулаарай (have it repaired, please) - хүлээлгэсэн (kept waiting), as in Хүлээлгэсэнд уучлаарай! "Sorry to have kept you waiting!" - with битгий: Битгий хүлээлгээрэй! "Don't keep me waiting!"

Old friends that are causatives

Some verbs you already know are causatives in disguise: үзүүлэх (to show) is "to make see", явуулах (to send) is "to make go", and сургах (to teach, to train) is "to make learn". English uses three unrelated words; Mongolian shows you the family.

5Good to know

Хүлээлгэсэнд уучлаарай! ("Sorry to have kept you waiting!") is one of the most useful sentences in Mongolia, where meetings rarely start exactly on time. It is the causative хүлээлгэх (to make wait) with –сан and the dative-locative: word for word, "forgive me for the making-wait". The usual answer is Зүгээр, зүгээр ("It's fine, it's fine").
