1Limba’s diary

LIMBA

Everyone helps push the car

Bold was right about the dirt road, but not about the sand. In the afternoon the wheels began to spin and the car sank up to its axles. We all got out: the four tourists, Tuyaa, Nomin and me. Bold stayed at the wheel, and we pushed together, laughing and shouting in three languages.

After twenty minutes the car was free. That evening Tuyaa taught me the word for what we had done: туслалцах, "to help one another".

2Dialogue

Номин
Өө, машин элсэнд суучихлаа!Oh no, the car is stuck in the sand!
Болд
Бүгдээрээ буугаад машинаа түлхэж туслаарай.Everyone, get out and help push the car.
Туяа
За, бүгдээрээ туслалцъя!Right, let's all help one another!
Limba
Би хаана зогсох вэ?Where shall I stand?
Болд
Ар талд нь Номинтой хамт зогсоод түлх. Гурав гэхэд түлхээрэй!Stand at the back with Nomin and push. Push when I say three!
Туяа
Нэг, хоёр, гурав!One, two, three!
Номин
Явж байна! Явж байна!It's moving! It's moving!
Болд
Гарлаа! Бүгдэд баярлалаа!We're out! Thank you, everyone!
Limba
Бид сайн туслалцлаа.We helped one another well.
Туяа
Тийм. Монголд замд гарсан хүмүүс бие биедээ үргэлж туслалцдаг.Yes. In Mongolia, people on the road always help one another.
Limba
Одоо жуулчидтай сайн танилцъя. Би тэдний нэрийг сайн мэдэхгүй байна.Now let me really get to know the tourists. I don't know their names well.
Туяа
Тэгье. Орой галын дэргэд бүгдээрээ ярилцъя.Let's. This evening, by the fire, let's all talk together.
Limba
Өнөөдөр бид ус, хоолоо хуваалцаж, гар барилцаж танилцлаа.Today we shared our water and food, shook hands and got to know each other.

4Grammar and explanations

An action shared by two sides

The suffix –лц– goes between the stem and the ending, like the causative and the passive. It says that the action is shared: each side does it with, or to, the other. This is the cooperative.

Plain verbWith –лц–Meaning
туслах (to help)туслалцахto help one another
ярих (to speak)ярилцахto talk together, to discuss
таних (to know, to recognise)танилцахto get to know each other
хуваах (to divide)хуваалцахto share
барих (to hold)барилцахto hold each other: гар барилцах, to shake hands
тохирох (to suit)тохиролцохto agree on something
орох (to go in)оролцохto take part

Read the table downwards: speaking becomes a conversation, dividing becomes sharing, holding becomes a handshake, going in becomes joining in.

The other side takes the comitative

When an action is shared, you usually say with whom, and that person takes –тай / –той / –тэй from lesson 72.

Би жуулчидтай танилцсан.I tourist-PL-COM get.to.know-PAST"I got to know the tourists."
Номин Туяатай ярилцаж байна.Nomin Tuyaa-COM talk-CONV be-PRES-FUT"Nomin is talking with Tuyaa."

Each other: бие биедээ

For "one another", Mongolian says бие биедээ, literally "body to its own body", very often together with –лц–.

Бид бие биедээ туслалцсан."We helped one another."
Монголчууд замд бие биедээ туслалцдаг."Mongolians help one another on the road."

Everything after it stays the same

–лц– is not an ending. The verb after it takes any ending you know, chosen by vowel harmony as usual: туслалцъя (let's help one another), ярилцлаа (we have talked it over), танилцдаг (they get acquainted), хуваалцсан (shared), тохиролцсон (agreed).

Бид маргааш эрт гарахаар тохиролцсон."We agreed to leave early tomorrow."

Do not build your own

–лц– lives on a limited set of verbs. Learn the ones in the table; a guess may give a word that does not exist, or one with an unexpected meaning. Some useful nouns come from these verbs: ярилцлага (interview, lesson 127) and туслалцаа (help, assistance).

5Good to know

On the roads of the Gobi and the steppe, a driver rarely passes a car that is stuck or broken down without stopping. Helping each other on the road is an unwritten rule: today you push someone's car out of the sand, tomorrow someone pushes yours. Herders share water, fuel and a cup of tea with travellers in the same spirit.
