1Limba’s diary

LIMBA

Limba's first week as volunteer

Friday. My first week as a volunteer is over, and in the evening I went to Oyuunaa's class to tell everyone about it. I explained what Gerel had told me, what the tourists had asked, what I must do and what I only should do.

Oyuunaa corrected just two small things. Then she asked whether I would come back to class after the Gobi. Of course I will: an interpreter needs more lessons than anyone.

2Dialogue

How was your first week of volunteer work?
Limba
Very interesting. I met a lot of tourists.
What did the tourists ask?
Limba
One tourist asked whether Kharkhorin was far. Another asked whether buses go to the Gobi.
What did you answer?
Limba
I said it was about six hours by car.
Good. What did Gerel tell you?
Limba
She said that even a volunteer must come on time. She also said I should speak English with the tourists.
Had you done this kind of work before?
Limba
No, never. Talking on the phone was the hardest part.
Why?
Limba
People speak fast. I said "Say it again, please" many times.
That's understandable. There's a test next week, you know. Will you come?
Limba
Sorry, I have to go to the Gobi. I'll take the test when I'm back.
All right. Have a good trip! Write me a letter from there.
Limba
I will. Not a formal letter, a friendly one!

5Good to know

In Mongolia the school and university year starts on 1 September, and the summer holidays are long, from June to the end of August. That is why Nomin, a student, is free to come on the Gobi trip in August, and why Ulaanbaatar feels quieter in July and August: many families are in the countryside.
