1Limba’s diary

LIMBA

Rules of the office

My fever has gone and I cannot sit still any more. Nomin has found the right thing for me: a small tourist information centre in the middle of Ulaanbaatar is looking for volunteers who speak English.

This morning we went there together. Gerel, the coordinator, showed us the office: four desks, two computers, a big map of Mongolia and, next to it, a sheet of paper called "Office rules".

I read it word by word. Some rules say "must", others only say "should", and in Mongolian you can see the difference at once.

2Dialogue

Гэрэл
Манай төвд тавтай морил! Энэ бол манай оффис.Welcome to our centre! This is our office.
Limba
Баярлалаа. Энэ цаасан дээр юу гэж бичсэн бэ?Thank you. What does this sheet of paper say?
Гэрэл
Манай оффисын дүрэм. Ажилтнууд бүгд үүнийг мэдэх ёстой.Our office rules. All the staff must know them.
Limba
"Ажилтнууд өглөө есөн цагт ирэх ёстой." Би бас есөн цагт ирэх ёстой юу?"Staff must arrive at nine in the morning." Must I come at nine too?
Гэрэл
Тийм ээ. Та сайн дурын ажилтан ч гэсэн цагтаа ирэх ёстой.Yes. Even as a volunteer, you must come on time.
Limba
"Энд хоол идэх ёсгүй." Цай ууж болох уу?"No eating here." May I drink tea?
Гэрэл
Цайгаа гал тогоонд уувал зохино. Компьютерийн дэргэд цай байх ёсгүй.You should drink your tea in the kitchen. There must be no tea next to the computers.
Limba
"Зохино" гэдэг нь "ёстой" гэсэн үг үү?Does "зохино" mean the same as "ёстой"?
Гэрэл
Үгүй. "Ёстой" бол дүрэм. "Зохино" бол зөвлөгөө: ингэж хийвэл зөв.No. "Ёстой" is a rule. "Зохино" is advice: if you do it this way, it is right.
Limba
Ойлголоо. Өөр юу хийх хэрэгтэй вэ?I see. What else do I need to do?
Гэрэл
Жуулчдад тусалж, асуултад нь хариулах хэрэгтэй. Тэдэнтэй англиар ярьвал зохино.You need to help the tourists and answer their questions. You should speak English with them.
Limba
Тэгээд орой?And in the evening?
Гэрэл
Орой гэрэл, компьютер хоёроо унтраах ёстой. Үүнийг мартаж болохгүй шүү!In the evening you must switch off the lights and the computers. Don't forget that!
Limba
Мартахгүй. Маргааш хэдэн цагт ирэх хэрэгтэй вэ?I won't forget. What time do I need to come tomorrow?
Гэрэл
Маргааш таны ярилцлага байна. Арван цагт ирээрэй.Tomorrow is your interview. Come at ten.

4Grammar and explanations

Must, need to, should

English has three little words for duties and advice. Mongolian has three constructions, and each one hangs on the verb in its own way.

MongolianWhat it saysEnglish
–х ёстойa rule, a dutymust
–х хэрэгтэйa practical needneed to, have to
–вал зохиноadvice, the right thing to doshould

–х ёстой: the rule

Put the verb in its dictionary form in –х and add ёстой. Ёс means custom, the proper way, so ёстой says "it is the rule". The verb never changes for the person: би, та and ажилтнууд all take the same ирэх ёстой.

Ажилтнууд есөн цагт ирэх ёстой.employee-PL nine hour-DAT come-PART must"Staff must come at nine."
Орой гэрлээ унтраах ёстой.evening light-REFL switch.off-PART must"In the evening you must switch off the light."

The negative is –х ёсгүй, "must not". It is the word you read on signs and in rules.

Энд хоол идэх ёсгүй."You must not eat here."

–х хэрэгтэй: what the work needs

You met хэрэгтэй in lesson 63. It also follows the –х form, but it describes a practical need, not a rule written on the wall.

Жуулчдад тусалж, асуултад нь хариулах хэрэгтэй."You need to help the tourists and answer their questions."

–вал зохино: advice

Зохино is the present-future of зохих, "to suit, to be right". The verb in front of it takes the conditional –вал / –вол / –вэл / –вөл from lesson 93, so word for word it says "if you do it, it is right". It recommends without ordering, and it sounds a little more formal than –вал дээр ("it would be better") from lesson 113.

Жуулчидтай англиар ярьвал зохино.tourist-PL-COM English-INS speak-CONV suit-PRES-FUT"You should speak English with the tourists."
Цайгаа гал тогоонд уувал зохино.tea-REFL kitchen-DAT drink-CONV suit-PRES-FUT"You should drink your tea in the kitchen."

Which one do I choose?

Asking

Ёстой and хэрэгтэй end in –той and –тэй, so a yes/no question takes юу or юү: Би бас ирэх ёстой юу? "Must I come too?" With a question word, use вэ: Хэдэн цагт ирэх хэрэгтэй вэ? "What time do I need to come?"

5Good to know

On the door of almost every Mongolian office you will see the opening hours and a line such as Цайны цаг 13:00–14:00. Word for word it is "tea time", but it means the lunch break: during that hour the office is closed, so do not plan a visit then. Many small shops and government offices have their own цайны цаг too.
