1Limba’s diary

LIMBA

An article about national parks

Bat leaves the newspaper open on the kitchen table at an article about Mongolia's protected areas. "Read it," he says. "You've been to Khövsgöl. Now find out who protects it."

The article is full of long verbs: хамгаалагдаж, байгуулагдсан, нутагшуулсан. Each one hides a small suffix in the middle. With a pencil, a cup of tea and Bat at my side, I take them apart one by one.

2Dialogue

Limba
"Богд хан уул XVIII зуунаас хойш хамгаалагдаж ирсэн." Хамгаалагдаж гэдэг нь юу вэ?"Bogd Khan Mountain has been protected since the 18th century." What is хамгаалагдаж?
Бат
Хамгаалах гэдэг үйл үгэнд гд нэмсэн. Хүмүүс уулыг хамгаалдаг, уул өөрөө хамгаалагддаг.It's the verb хамгаалах with гд added. People protect the mountain; the mountain itself is protected.
Limba
"Энэ уул дэлхийн хамгийн эртний хамгаалалттай газруудын нэг гэж тооцогддог.""This mountain is considered one of the oldest protected areas in the world."
Бат
Тооцох биш, тооцогдох. Энд бас гд байна.Not тооцох but тооцогдох. There's a гд here too.
Limba
"Хустайн нуруунд тахийг сэргээн нутагшуулсан." Нутагшуулсан гэдэг нь юу гэсэн үг вэ?"In the Khustai mountains the takhi has been reintroduced." What does нутагшуулсан mean?
Бат
Нутагших гэдэг нь шинэ газарт амьдарч сурах. –уул– нэмэхээр "амьдарч сургах" болно.Нутагших means "to learn to live in a new place". Add –уул– and it becomes "to make them learn to live there".
Limba
Тэгвэл хүмүүс тахийг энд авчирч, амьдарч сургасан уу?So people brought the takhi here and taught them to live here?
Бат
Яг тийм. Тахь нэг үе байгальд устаж алга болсон. 1990-ээд онд Европоос авчирсан.Exactly. At one time the takhi disappeared from the wild. In the 1990s they were brought from Europe.
Limba
"Хамгаалалттай газарт мод огтлох, ан агнахыг хориглодог.""In protected areas, cutting trees and hunting are forbidden."
Бат
Энд дагавар байхгүй, гэхдээ хэн хориглодог нь тодорхойгүй. Сонинд ингэж их бичдэг.There's no special suffix here, but it doesn't say who forbids it. Newspapers often write like that.
Limba
"Байгаль хамгаалагчдыг нэмж ажиллуулж байна.""More rangers are being employed."
Бат
Ажиллах гэдгийг ажиллуулах болгосон. Өөрөөр хэлбэл хэн нэгэн тэднийг ажилд авч байна.Ажиллах has become ажиллуулах. In other words, someone is taking them on.
Limba
Урт үйл үгийг ингэж уншихад амархан болж байна.Reading long verbs like this is getting easy.

4Grammar and explanations

Find the slot between the stem and the ending

A long verb in a newspaper is built in three layers: stem + voice suffix + ending. Peel off the ending, then look for –гд– (passive) or –уул– / –үүл– (causative) in front of it. A linking vowel often appears before –гд–: хамгаала–гд–, тооцо–гд–.

WordStemVoiceEndingMeaning
хамгаалагдажхамгаал––гд––жbeing protected
тооцогддогтооц––гд––догis considered
байгуулагдсанбайгуул––гд––санwas founded
нутагшуулсаннутагш––уул––санsettled (animals) in an area
ажиллуулжажилл––уул––жemploying

The passive: the thing affected becomes the subject

With –гд–, the thing that is protected, founded or considered becomes the subject. Who did it is usually left out.

Богд хан уул XVIII зуунаас хойш хамгаалагдаж ирсэн.Bogd Khan mountain 18th century-ABL since protect-PASS-CONV come-PAST"Bogd Khan Mountain has been protected since the 18th century."
Шинэ мэдээллийн төв байгуулагдсан.A new information centre has been set up.

The causative: someone makes it happen

With –уул–, the subject does not do the action but makes it happen:

Хустайн нуруунд тахийг сэргээн нутагшуулсан.Khustai-GEN range-DAT takhi-ACC restore-CONV settle-CAUS-PAST"In the Khustai mountains the takhi has been reintroduced."
Байгаль хамгаалагчдыг нэмж ажиллуулж байна.More rangers are being employed.

сэргээн is a converb typical of written style: it does the same job as сэргээж. You will meet it in pairs such as сэргээн нутагшуулах (to reintroduce) and хамтран ажиллах (to work together).

No agent, no passive

Mongolian newspapers often keep the verb active and simply leave out the subject. Мод огтлохыг хориглодог is literally "(they) forbid cutting trees": English turns it into a passive, "cutting trees is forbidden".

The article's own title is a good example of a long noun group: Монголын тусгай хамгаалалттай газар, "Mongolia's specially protected areas". хамгаалалт is a noun in –лт (lesson 153), and –тай turns it into an adjective: "having protection".

Verbs that only look passive

Some ordinary verbs carry –гд– without any sense of "being done to": нэмэгдэх (to increase), өөрчлөгдөх (to change), таалагдах (to be liked). Read them as single verbs: Жуулчдын тоо нэмэгдсэн, "the number of tourists has increased".

5Good to know

Mongolia's protected areas come in four kinds: strictly protected areas (дархан цаазат газар), national parks (байгалийн цогцолборт газар), nature reserves and natural monuments. Bogd Khan Mountain, just south of Ulaanbaatar, is often described as one of the oldest protected areas in the world. Khustai National Park, about a hundred kilometres west of the capital, is where the takhi, Przewalski's horse, was brought back to Mongolia in the 1990s after disappearing from the wild.
