4Grammar and explanations
A participle phrase is a noun phrase
Since lesson 102 you have put a participle in front of a noun: бидний хоносон газар, "the place where we spent the night". The whole phrase works like one big noun, so it can take any case ending. The ending goes on the last word, the noun.
| Case | Example | English |
|---|
| nominative | бидний хоносон газар | the place where we spent the night |
| accusative | бидний хоносон газрыг | that place, as an object |
| dative-locative | бидний хоносон газарт | at the place where we spent the night |
| ablative | бидний хоносон газраас | from the place where we spent the night |
Би бидний хоносон газрыг мартахгүй.I we-GEN spend.night-PAST place-ACC forget-PART-NEG"I won't forget the place where we spent the night."
Тэдний бидэнд өгсөн хоормог их амттай байсан."The khoormog they gave us was delicious."
The participle alone, with a case
Often there is no noun at all: the participle itself means "what was done", and it takes the ending directly. The short vowel of –сан drops before a vowel.
| Ending | Form | Meaning |
|---|
| accusative –ыг / –ийг | ярьсныг, хэлснийг | what (he) said, as an object |
| ablative –аас / –ээс | санаснаас, ирснээс | than (I) expected; since (he) came |
| dative-locative –д | тусалсанд, хүлээж авсанд | for helping, for having us |
Түүний ярьсныг би ойлгоогүй.he-GEN speak-PAST-ACC I understand-PART-NEG"I didn't understand what he said."
Говь миний санаснаас илүү сайхан байсан.Gobi I-GEN expect-PAST-ABL more beautiful be-PAST"The Gobi was more beautiful than I had expected."
Тусалсанд баярлалаа!"Thank you for helping!"
The ablative in санаснаас is the ablative of comparison from lesson 78: more beautiful "than what I expected".
Since: –снаас хойш
With хойш (since, after), the ablative of –сан means "since doing".
Монголд ирснээс хойш би их зүйл сурсан."Since coming to Mongolia, I have learned a great deal."
