4Grammar and explanations
Real or unreal?
Lesson 93 gave you the real condition in –вал: something that may still happen.
Цаг гарвал очно."If I have time, I'll go." (perhaps I will)
For something that did not happen, or that is not true, Mongolian uses a different pattern: –сан бол … –х байсан.
Цаг гарсан бол очих байсан."If I had had time, I would have gone." (but I didn't)
The pattern
| Part | Form | English |
|---|
| the condition | verb in –сан + бол | if … had … / if … were … |
| the result | verb in –х + байсан | would (have) … |
Хэрвээ at the start is optional, as it is with –вал. The word that makes the condition is бол, standing after the –сан form.
Би тэнд үлдсэн бол тэмээ сааж сурах байсан.I there stay-PAST if camel milk-CONV learn-PART be-PAST"If I had stayed there, I would have learned to milk camels."
Хэрвээ би залуу байсан бол та нартай хамт явах байсан."If I were young, I would have gone with you."
Negative conditions and results
- –аагүй бол: "if … had not". Машин элсэнд суугаагүй бол "if the car hadn't got stuck in the sand".
- –хгүй байсан: "would not have". Бид найз болохгүй байсан. "We wouldn't have become friends."
Бороо ороогүй бол зам хаагдахгүй байсан.rain fall-PAST-NEG if road close-PASS-PART-NEG be-PAST"If it hadn't rained, the road wouldn't have been closed."
Regret: харамсах
Харамсах means "to regret, to be sorry about something". Харамсалтай нь at the start of a sentence means "unfortunately".
Харамсалтай нь бид нэг өдөр илүү үлдээгүй."Unfortunately, we didn't stay one more day."
Real conditions stay real
Do not use –сан бол for things that can still happen. For those, keep –вал and its negative –хгүй бол:
Чи ирэхгүй бол би чам руу элс явуулна."If you don't come, I'll send you sand."
