1Limba’s diary

LIMBA

Leaving the camp: thank you and goodbye

Bold arrived this morning to drive us back to Ulaanbaatar, and I did not want to go. In one week I have milked a cow (badly), made milk tea (half of it), ridden the grey horse (slowly), and learnt to come in, sit and keep quiet the right way in a ger.

Dulmaa gave us a bag of dried curds for the road. At the door I thanked her with the long sentence Nomin had taught me. She laughed, hugged me and reminded me about my hat.

2Dialogue

Limba
Эмээ, Болд машинаа аваад ирлээ. Бид явах цаг боллоо.Grandma, Bold has come with his car. It's time for us to go.
Дулмаа
Цайгаа уугаад яваарай. Замдаа даарна шүү.Drink your tea before you go. You'll get cold on the road, mind.
Limba
Энэ шар аяга минийх, тийм үү?This yellow bowl is mine, isn't it?
Дулмаа
Тийм. Дахиад ирээд энэ аягаар цай уугаарай.Yes. Come back again and drink your tea from it.
Номин

Limba
Биднийг гэртээ хүлээн авсанд маш их баярлалаа.Thank you very much for having us in your home.

4Grammar and explanations

Unit 9 at a glance

A week in the ger taught you the small words and endings that make Mongolian sound natural.

LessonWhat it doesExample
81don't / no need toБитгий исгэрээрэй. Тогших хэрэггүй.
82one's own: –аа / –оо / –ээ / –өөмалгайгаа, гэртээ, номоо
83and then: –аад / –оод / –ээд / –өөдЦайгаа уугаад яваарай.
84together, and: –ж / –чМорь унаж сурсан.
85reported words: гэж"Нохой хаздаг" гэж хэлсэн.
86his, her; as for: ньХоол нь амттай.
87tone: шүү, даа, юмДаарна шүү! Гайгүй дээ.
88asking for agreement: биз дээ, тийм үүМинийх, тийм үү?
89mine, whose: минийх, хэнийхЭнэ аяга хэнийх вэ?

Three things that end in –аа

Do not mix up three different things that can end in –аа:

Look at where it is: on a noun, on a verb, or alone at the end.

New sentences with the same tools

Би гэртээ ирээд цайгаа уусан.I ger-DAT-REFL come-CONV tea-REFL drink-PAST"I came home and drank my tea."
Дулмаа "Битгий мартаарай" гэж хэлсэн.Dulmaa don't forget-IMP saying say-PAST"Dulmaa said, 'Don't forget.'"
Тэр морь унаж сурсан биз дээ?he horse ride-CONV learn-PAST I.suppose"He has learnt to ride, hasn't he?"
Энэ малгай хэнийх вэ? Минийх биш."Whose hat is this? It's not mine."

Converbs: one tense for the whole sentence

In every sentence with –аад or –ж, only the last verb carries the tense: уугаад яваарай is an invitation, уугаад явсан is past, уугаад явна is future. Read to the end before you translate.

Possession, three ways

миний малгай (my hat: the owner named in front), малгай минь (my hat, warmer, after the noun), and малгайгаа (one's own hat, pointing back to the subject). And standing alone: минийх (mine).

5Good to know

Mongolian goodbyes depend on who is leaving. The one who stays says Сайн яваарай! "Go well!"; the one who leaves says Сайн сууж байгаарай! "Stay well!", literally "keep sitting well". To thank a family for a visit, not just for a cup of tea, learn the whole sentence: Биднийг гэртээ хүлээн авсанд маш их баярлалаа.
