4Grammar and explanations
Small words that carry the voice
In English, much of what we feel about a sentence is in the voice: a warning tone, a reassuring tone. Mongolian writes it down, with small separate words at the very end of the sentence. They change nothing in the grammar: the verb keeps its tense, the nouns keep their cases. They change the tone. This lesson shows three of them.
шүү: a warning or a reminder
шүү pushes the listener to pay attention: "mind you", "you know", "I'm telling you".
Нохой хаздаг шүү.dog bite-HAB mind"The dog bites, mind you."
Хүйтэн байна шүү!cold be-PRES-FUT mind"It's really cold, I tell you!"
байна шүү is one of the commonest endings in spoken Mongolian. Without шүү, Хүйтэн байна is just information; with it, it is a remark you share or a warning you give.
даа: warmth and insistence
даа makes a statement warmer or more insistent: "really", "surely", "you will". It has four forms, chosen by the vowels of the word in front, like other endings: даа, доо, дээ, дөө.
Чи даарна даа!you get.cold-PRES-FUT surely"You'll catch cold, you will!"
Гайгүй дээ.no.problem surely"It's fine, really."
The tone is that of a grandmother: caring, a little insistent, never cold. Гайгүй дээ is a kind way to calm someone down.
юм: "that's how it is"
юм presents what you say as a fact or as an explanation, often where English adds "you see" or "that's all".
Нохой гэрээ хамгаалдаг юм.dog ger-REFL guard-HAB it.is"The dog is guarding its ger, that's all."
With бол, юм gives a definition: Нохой бол малчны найз юм. "The dog is the herder's friend." Do not confuse it with the noun юм "thing": the particle stands at the end and never takes an ending, while the noun does (энэ юмыг, this thing).
Where they go
| Particle | Job | Example |
|---|
| шүү | warns, reminds | Энд чоно байдаг шүү. (There are wolves here, you know.) |
| даа / дээ / доо / дөө | warms, insists | Чи даарна даа! (You'll catch cold!) |
| юм | states, explains | Хөдөө нохой хэрэгтэй юм. (A dog is needed in the countryside.) |
All three go at the very end, after the verb or the adjective that closes the sentence. One particle per sentence is usually enough.
