1Limba’s diary

LIMBA

Limba remembers the arrival

Tonight I read my diary from the very first page: the plane, the airport signs I could not read, Saraa's smile at the door, the first night in a ger, the buuz of Tsagaan Sar, the horses at Naadam, the camel in the Gobi.

A year ago I could say three words. Tonight I told Temuulen the whole story in Mongolian, and he only corrected me twice. Then he said something that made me very proud.

2Dialogue

Limba, what were you like when you first came?
Limba
When I got off the plane, I was really scared. I didn't understand a word of Mongolian.

What did you do in the summer?
Limba
I watched Naadam. Then I fell ill, and your mother treated me. In the Gobi I rode a camel.
You've changed, you know.
Limba
Have I? How?

4Grammar and explanations

One year, every past form

A long story about yourself needs all the past forms of the course, each doing its own job. Here they are in the order you will need them.

FormIts job in a life storyExample
–санthe events, one after anotherБи Говьд тэмээ унасан.
–хад, –хдаа"when …"
–ж байсанhow things were at that momentБи их айж байсан.
–даг байсанwhat you used to doӨдөр бүр бууз иддэг байсан.
–даг болсонa new habit, the changeОдоо хурдан ярьдаг болсон.
–лааthe story reaches the presentНэг жил өнгөрлөө.
–в, –жээthe written voice of a diary or a narratorБи Улаанбаатарт ирэв.

Events and their background

The events of your story are in –сан, linked by –аад when one follows another. Every so often, stop the film and describe the moment with –ж байсан, or a habit of that time with –даг байсан.

Онгоцноос буухад их айж байсан.plane-ABL get.off-PART-DAT very fear-CONV be-PAST"When I got off the plane, I was very scared."
I used to eat buuz every day.

The end of the story touches today

–лаа brings the story to the present moment, and –даг болсон says what is different now.

A year has gone by.
Now I speak Mongolian fast.

The written voice

In a diary written for others, or a story told to an audience, Mongolian slips into –в for events and –жээ for things you only realise now:

Би есдүгээр сард Улаанбаатарт ирэв.I arrived in Ulaanbaatar in September.
I had changed, as it turns out.

That last sentence is the whole point of looking back: –жээ is the past you discover.

5Good to know

Keeping a diary, өдрийн тэмдэглэл, is one of the best ways to practise the past forms. Write five sentences every evening: two events in –сан, one moment in –ж байсан, one habit in –даг байсан, and one sentence about how you feel now. After a month, read the first page again: like Limba, you will find that
