1Limba’s diary

АаLIMBA

Limba's study plan

My biggest fear about going home is not the jet lag. It is waking up one morning in Canada and finding that my Mongolian has quietly left me.

So today Oyuunaa and I made a plan, a real one, with days and times: what to read, what to listen to, who to talk to. She ended with one piece of advice that had nothing to do with grammar, and it is the one I will remember best.

2Dialogue

Оюунаа
Лимба, Канадад очоод монгол хэлээ яаж сурсаар байх вэ?Limba, how will you keep on learning Mongolian once you're in Canada?
Limba
Үнэндээ мэдэхгүй байна. Мартахаас айж байна.To be honest, I don't know. I'm afraid of forgetting it.
Оюунаа
Санаа зоволтгүй. Хамгийн гол нь өдөр бүр бага ч гэсэн хичээллэх.Don't worry. The main thing is to study every day, even a little.
Limba
Юунаас эхлэх вэ?Where should I start?
Оюунаа
Нэгдүгээрт, монголоор уншсаар байгаарай. Өдөр бүр нэг нийтлэл уншвал сайн.First, keep reading in Mongolian. One article a day would be good.
Limba
Сонсох талаар юу хийх вэ?And what about listening?
Оюунаа
Монгол дуу, радио сонсож бай. Кино үзвэл бүр сайн.Listen to Mongolian songs and the radio. Films are even better.
Limba
Ярих хүн байхгүй бол яах вэ?What if I have nobody to talk to?
Оюунаа
Номин, Тэмүүлэн хоёртой онлайнаар ярь. Долоо хоногт хоёр удаа.Talk online with Nomin and Temuulen. Twice a week.
Limba
Би монгол хэл сурахаа хэзээ ч болихгүй!I will never stop learning Mongolian!
Оюунаа
Сайн. Ганц зөвлөгөө: алдаа гаргахаас айхаа боль.Good. Just one piece of advice: stop being afraid of making mistakes.
Limba
За. Би төлөвлөгөө бичээд ханан дээрээ наана.All right. I'll write the plan down and stick it on my wall.
Оюунаа
Асуулт гарвал надад бичээрэй. Би үргэлж туслана.If you have questions, write to me. I'll always help.

4Grammar and explanations

Keep going: –саар байх

The converb –саар / –соор / –сээр / –сөөр (lesson 164) with байх means "to keep on doing". As advice, put байх in the polite imperative: –саар байгаарай, "keep on …".

Монголоор уншсаар байгаарай.Mongolian-INS read-CONV be-IMP"Keep reading in Mongolian."
Би монгол хэл сурсаар байна.I'm still learning Mongolian.
VerbStem–саар form
уншихунш–уншсаар
сурахсур–сурсаар
сонсохсонс–сонссоор
бичихбич–бичсээр

Stop doing: –хаа болих

болих means "to stop, to give up". What you stop is a verb in –х with the reflexive ending –аа / –оо / –ээ / –өө: literally "to give up one's own doing".

Тэр тамхи татахаа больсон.he cigarette smoke-PART-REFL stop-PAST"He has stopped smoking."
Би монгол хэл сурахаа хэзээ ч болихгүй.I will never stop learning Mongolian.
Алдаа гаргахаас айхаа боль.Stop being afraid of making mistakes.

The harmony is the usual one: сурахаа, ярихаа, уншихаа, үзэхээ.

A toolbox for advice

FormStrengthExample
–вал сайн, –вал дээрa gentle suggestionӨдөр бүр уншвал сайн.
–аарайa friendly instructionНадад бичээрэй.
–х хэрэгтэйyou need toӨдөр бүр давтах хэрэгтэй.
хамгийн гол нь …the main pointХамгийн гол нь өдөр бүр хичээллэх.

How often

өдөр бүр (every day), долоо хоногт хоёр удаа (twice a week), сард нэг удаа (once a month). The period takes the dative-locative, and удаа counts the times.

Putting the plan together

A study plan combines all three: what to keep doing, what to stop, and how often. Oyuunaa's plan for Limba fits in two sentences:

Өдөр бүр монголоор уншсаар байгаарай, долоо хоногт хоёр удаа онлайнаар ярь.Keep reading in Mongolian every day, and talk online twice a week.
Алдаа гаргахаас айхаа боль.Stop being afraid of making mistakes.

Write your own plan in the same shape, in Mongolian, and put it where you will see it every morning.

5Good to know

A plan you can keep beats a perfect plan. Five new words a day make more than 1,800 words in a year, and one Mongolian song a day trains your ear for free.

Oyuunaa's last piece of advice is the most important one in this course. Every mistake you make out loud is a sentence you have dared to say, and Mongolians will always answer the courage, not the error.
