I am writing this on the plane, somewhere above the Gobi. A year ago, on this same flight, I could not read the word on the exit sign. Today a Mongolian passenger asked me where I had learnt to speak like that, and we talked for an hour.
In my bag: Dulmaa's proverbs, Natsagdorj's two lines, Temuulen's list of promises, a blue khadag. In my head: a whole language.
This is not the end of my Mongolian. It is the end of the beginning.
