1Limba’s diary

LIMBA

Limba's favourite things in Mongolia

Our unit on arts and ideas ended with a little ceremony: each student had to present their favourite things in Mongolia, in Mongolian, in front of the class.

I had a list of thirty things and five minutes. In the end I chose four: the music, a poem, the people and a proverb. Anna teased me about Mongolian goodbyes, Oyuunaa corrected one ending, and when I recited Natsagdorj's two lines, the whole class said them with me.

2Dialogue

Well, Limba, what have you come to love most in Mongolia?
Limba
Honestly, there are so many things. Firstly, the sound of the morin khuur.
Have you heard khöömii?
Limba
Of course! The first time I heard a throat singer make two sounds at once, I was amazed.
And secondly?
Limba
Secondly, literature. I know two lines of the poem "Миний нутаг" by heart.
Анна
Recite them for us!
Limba
This is the land where I was born, / The beautiful country of Mongolia."
Beautiful. What comes third?
Limba
The Mongolian people. They are kind-hearted and generous.
And they tell lots of jokes! They say a Mongolian says "I'm off" and talks for another hour.
Limba
Ha ha! True. Finally, Grandma Dulmaa's proverbs.
Which one do you like best?
Limba
If you make the effort yourself, fate makes an effort too." If I hadn't tried hard, I wouldn't be speaking Mongolian.
Very good. You yourself are a hard-working, patient student, you know.
Limba
Thank you, teacher. It's all thanks to you.

Telling, describing, imagining

The unit gave you three ways of talking about the world: telling (a plot, a joke), describing (a sound, a person) and imagining (a hypothesis). Each has its verb forms.

Эрт урьд цагт нэгэн хөгжимчин байжээ.long ago time-DAT one musician be-PAST"Once upon a time there was a musician."
He is quiet, but great fun.
If I hadn't tried hard, I wouldn't be speaking Mongolian.

Quoting the culture

Poems, proverbs and jokes are all quoted the same way: the words, then гэдэг, гэж or гэнэ.

Heaven helps those who help themselves," as they say.
They say a Mongolian says "I'm off" and talks for another hour.

Sounding natural

Open with a marker, give your reasons in order, and close politely:

Honestly, there are so many things. Firstly, the sound of the morin khuur.
It's all thanks to you.

5Good to know

Make your own list: five favourite things in Mongolia, each with one reason, in the order of lesson 179 (нэгдүгээрт … Saying why you love something uses nearly everything in this unit: description, a story, a quotation, a hypothesis. Then say the list aloud without reading it. That is fluency.
