Jokes at a party

Nomin's birthday party filled the flat with her friends, a cake and a lot of noise. Late in the evening somebody said that the foreigner had to tell a joke, in Mongolian, of course.

I told the only funny story I really own: the day I asked a shop assistant for hair. Everybody laughed, and then the jokes started flying around the table.

I understood most of them. Being able to laugh at the right moment felt like passing an exam.

2Dialogue

Номин
Лимба, нэг онигоо ярь л даа!Limba, come on, tell us a joke!
Limba
За. Би анх Монголд ирэхдээ дэлгүүрт "Надад үс өгөөч" гэсэн.OK. When I first came to Mongolia, I said in a shop: "Give me some hair, please."
Номин
Үс үү? Ха ха ха!Hair?! Ha ha ha!
Limba
Худалдагч "Үс үү, ус уу?" гэж асуусан. Би ус уумаар байсан юм.The shop assistant asked: "Hair, or water?" I wanted to drink water.
Тэмүүлэн
Лимба, чи хэдэн хэл мэддэг вэ?Limba, how many languages do you know?
Limba
Хоёр хэл мэднэ: англи, монгол.I know two: English and Mongolian.
Тэмүүлэн
Худлаа! Чи ганцхан хэлтэй шүү дээ!Not true! You've only got one tongue!
Бүгд
Ха ха ха!Ha ha ha!
Бат
Би бас нэг онигоо мэднэ. Монгол хүн "Явлаа" гээд дахиад нэг цаг ярьдаг гэнэ.I know one too. They say a Mongolian says "I'm off!" and then talks for another hour.
Сараа
Энэ онигоо биш, үнэн шүү дээ!That's not a joke, it's the plain truth!
Limba
Хөөх! Болд яагаад "явлаа" гээд нэг цаг суусныг одоо ойлголоо.Wow! Now I understand why Bold said "I'm off" and then sat for an hour.
Бат
За, би ч гэсэн одоо явлаа шүү!Right, and now I'm off too!
Номин
Аав аа, тоглож байна уу? Энэ чинь манай гэр!Dad, are you kidding? This is our home!

4Grammar and explanations

How a joke is built

A Mongolian joke has the same three parts as an English one: a set-up, a punchline and the laugh. What is different is that the voice of the joke is written into small words at the ends of the sentences. Learn to hear them and you will know when to laugh.

Wordplay: one word, two meanings

WordMeaningsThe joke
хэлlanguage; tongue"How many languages?" — "You've only one tongue!"
ус / үсwater / hairone letter apart, a whole world apart
явлаа"I'm off!" (the moment just ahead)the guest who says it and stays an hour

Temuulen's joke works because хэл is both words at once: he asks about languages, then answers about tongues with ганцхан хэлтэй, "having only one tongue". Bat's joke works because –лаа announces something that is about to happen (lesson 52), and Mongolian guests are famous for announcing it a long time in advance.

Particles that land the punchline

ParticleWhat it does in a jokeExample
гэнэ"so the story goes": the voice of an anecdoteМонгол хүн … ярьдаг гэнэ.
шүү дээ"you know!": the punch itselfЧи ганцхан хэлтэй шүү дээ!
юм байна"so that's it!": sudden understandingТийм юм байна!
echo + уу/үүsurprise, disbeliefҮс үү?
Чи ганцхан хэлтэй шүү дээ!you only tongue-COM you.know"You've only got one tongue, you know!"
Монгол хүн "Явлаа" гээд дахиад нэг цаг ярьдаг гэнэ.They say a Mongolian says "I'm off" and then talks for another hour.
Үс үү? Ус уу?Hair? Or water?

The voice on paper

In writing, punctuation does the work of intonation: ! for the punchline, ? for an echo question, and … for the pause before it. Laughter is written Ха ха ха!, and surprise Хөөх!

Saying you were joking

The verb тоглох means both to play and to joke, and худлаа! ("that's a lie!") is the friendly protest of someone who has just been teased.

Би тоглосон юм.I was only joking.
Тоглож байна уу?Are you kidding?

5Good to know

A Mongolian farewell is long, and everyone knows it. The host offers one more cup of tea, the guest says Явлаа!, and the conversation starts again at the door. Laughing about it is part of the ritual, so Bat's joke works at every party in the country.

Laughing at yourself is the best joke a foreigner can tell. A story about your own mistake in Mongolian will always find an audience.
