4Grammar and explanations
Probably: add байх
To say that something is probable rather than certain, add байх after the verb. Its meaning here is not "to be" but "probably". The verb in front keeps its own time:
- –сан байх looks back: "probably did".
- –х байх looks ahead: "will probably".
- –ж байгаа байх or байгаа байх is about now: "is probably".
Тэр уснаас болсон байх.that water-ABL become-PAST be-PART"It was probably the water."
Хоёр гурван хоногийн дараа бүрэн эдгэрэх байх.two three day-GEN after completely recover-PART be-PART"In two or three days you will probably be completely better."
Номин найзтайгаа байгаа байх.Nomin friend-COM-REFL be-PART be-PART"Nomin is probably with her friend."
After a noun, an adjective or биш, байх alone does the job:
Хуушуураас биш байх.khuushuur-ABL not be-PART"It's probably not the khuushuur."
Maybe: байж магадгүй
магадгүй means "maybe, possibly". After байж it says "it may be so". It is less sure than байх:
Ус бохир байж магадгүй.water dirty be-CONV maybe"The water may be dirty."
Утас нь цэнэггүй болсон байж магадгүй.phone her battery-less become-PAST be-CONV maybe"Her phone may have run out of battery."
How sure are you?
| Form | How sure? | Example |
|---|
| болсон | certain | Уснаас болсон. "It was the water." |
| болсон байх | probable | Уснаас болсон байх. "It was probably the water." |
| болсон байж магадгүй | possible | Уснаас болсон байж магадгүй. "It may have been the water." |
"Because of": the ablative with болох
Уснаас болсон literally means "it became from the water", that is, "it was caused by the water". The cause goes in the ablative (lesson 36) and болох follows: хуушуураас болсон (because of the khuushuur), хүйтнээс болсон (because of the cold).
