4Grammar and explanations
"You'd better…": –
You know –вал from lesson 93: it means "if". дээр means "on, above", and also "better". Put the two together and you have the most common way to give advice: "if you do it, (it is) better".
Эрт унтвал дээр.early sleep-CONV better"You'd better go to bed early."
Oyuunaa teacher-DAT call-CONV better"You'd better call teacher Oyuunaa."
The four forms follow harmony, as in lesson 93: унтвал, уувал, залгавал (а, у); очвол (о); хийвэл, идвэл (э, и); өмсвөл (ө). After в and л the form usually begins with б: явбал, эхэлбэл.
For negative advice, take the negative –хгүй and add бол, which works here as "if":
Гадуур явахгүй бол дээр.outside go-NEG if better"You'd better not go out."
Зайрмаг идэхгүй бол дээр.ice.cream eat-NEG if better"It's better not to eat ice cream."
Even better:
Бүлээн ус уувал бүр дээр.warm water drink-CONV even better"Warm water is even better."
Advice, need, obligation
Mongolian separates three strengths that English often blurs:
| Pattern | Strength | Example |
|---|
| –х ёстой | must: a rule (lesson 69) | Гэртээ байх ёстой. |
Saraa uses all three: амрах хэрэгтэй (you need to rest), байх ёстой (a person with a fever must stay home), залгавал дээр (you'd better call).
Asking for advice
Put a question word inside, and finish with вэ:
Би юу хийвэл дээр вэ?I what do-CONV better Q"What should I do?"
Хэзээ очвол дээр вэ?when go-CONV better Q"When is the best time to go?"
