4Grammar and explanations
Even if, even though: –сан ч
Put the little word ч ("even, also") after the past participle –сан, and the clause means "even though" or "even if":
Би халуурсан ч явмаар байна.I fever-PAST even go-want be-PRES-FUT"Even though I have a fever, I want to go."
Халуун чинь буусан ч бие чинь сул байна.fever your go.down-PAST even body your weak be-PRES-FUT"Even if your fever has gone down, you are weak."
ч is written as a separate word. The four forms of –сан follow harmony as always: буусан ч, орсон ч, ирсэн ч, өгсөн ч.
The time comes from the end
Look at this sentence: the concert has not happened yet, and still the form is –сан ч.
Концерт сайхан байсан ч эрүүл мэнд илүү чухал.concert nice be-PAST even health more important"Even if the concert is good, health is more important."
–сан ч does not place anything in the past here. It only says "in spite of this". As with every link between two clauses, the time of the whole sentence is given by the last verb:
Бороо орсон ч бид явна.rain fall-PAST even we go-PRES-FUT"Even if it rains, we will go."
Тэгсэн ч: even so
тэгэх means "to do so, to be so". Тэгсэн ч at the start of a sentence answers what was just said: "even so, all the same".
Тэгсэн ч болохгүй юу?do.so-PAST even be.possible-NEG Q"Even so, it's not possible?"
Хэдий ч: however
Хэдий ч opens a sentence that goes against the previous one: "however, nevertheless".
Ээж зөв. Хэдий ч би ганцаараа явахгүй.mum right. however I alone go-NEG"Mum is right. However, I won't go alone."
–вч: the written form
In books and newspapers you will also meet –вч, which means the same as –сан ч. You will see it most often in боловч, "although, but", built on бол-:
Халуун буусан боловч бие сул байна.fever go.down-PAST although body weak be-PRES-FUT"Although the fever has gone down, the body is weak."
