Week 11. An invitation to the cinema

There is a new Georgian film at the cinema on Rustaveli Avenue, and Ana from Nino's group has two tickets. She phones me, and I have to accept the invitation in Georgian.

Today: invitations, and how to say yes or no politely.

2Dialogue

Ana
სემ, ხვალ საღამოს კინოში წამოხვალ?sem, khval saghamos k'inoshi ts'amokhval?Sam, will you come to the cinema with me tomorrow evening?
Sam
სიამოვნებით! რომელ საათზე?siamovnebit! romel saatze? With pleasure! At what time?
Ana
რვის ნახევარზე. კინოთეატრთან შევხვდებით, შვიდ საათზე.rvis nakhevarze. k'inoteat'rtan shevkhvdebit, shvid saatze. At half past seven. We'll meet at the cinema at seven o'clock.

Sam
კარგი, ხვალამდე! შვიდზე იქ ვიქნები.k'argi, khvalamde! shvidze ik viknebi.OK, see you tomorrow! I'll be there at seven.

How to read the pronunciation

The pronunciation is written in English letters, following Georgia’s official romanization. Say every letter: a as in father, e as in pet, i as in machine, o as in port, u as in rule; r is rolled; g is always hard; kh as in Scottish loch; gh a soft gargled g, like a French r; sh as in shop; zh like the s in pleasure; ch as in church; ts as in cats; dz as in adze; j as in jam. An apostrophe marks a “popped” consonant, said with a little click in the throat and no puff of air: k’, p’, t’, ts’, ch’, q’ (q’ is made deep in the throat). Without an apostrophe, k, p, t, ts, ch have a small puff of air. Use the Pronunciation button at the top to hide or show it.

4Grammar and explanations

Inviting

The simplest invitation is a question with წამოხვალts'amokhval? "will you come along?":

კინოში წამოხვალ?k'inoshi ts'amokhval?cinema-to will-you-come-alongWill you come to the cinema (with me)?
ჩვენთან წამოხვალთ?chventan ts'amokhvalt?us-at will-you-come-along (pol.)Will you come to our place?

You can also say დაგპატიჟებdagp'at'izheb, "I will invite you": დაბადების დღეზე დაგპატიჟებdabadebis dgheze dagp'at'izheb, "I'll invite you to my birthday".

Accepting and refusing

yesno
სიამოვნებითsiamovnebit! with pleasure!სამწუხაროდsamts'ukharod, ვერver. unfortunately I can't.
კიk'i, წამოვალts'amoval! yes, I'll come!ვერ მოვალver moval, დრო არ მაქვსdro ar makvs. I can't come, I have no time.
აუცილებლადautsileblad! definitely!ბოდიშიbodishi, სხვა დროსskhva dros. sorry, another time.

Meeting: შევხვდებითshevkhvdebit

შევხვდებითshevkhvdebit means "we will meet": კინოთეატრთან შევხვდებითk'inoteat'rtan shevkhvdebit, "we'll meet at the cinema". Add the time with -ზეze: შვიდ საათზეshvid saatze or simply შვიდზეshvidze.

See you...!: -მდეmde

-მდეmde (lesson 49) gives the classic goodbyes: ხვალამდეkhvalamde! (see you tomorrow!), შაბათამდეshabatamde! (see you on Saturday!), and ნახვამდისnakhvamdis itself means "until seeing".

5Good to know

Georgians are generous hosts and insistent inviters. A first "no" is often taken as politeness, and the invitation is repeated. If you really cannot come, give a reason: ვერ მოვალver moval, გამოცდა მაქვსgamotsda makvs.

სხვაskhva means "other": სხვა დროსskhva dros is "another time".
