How to read the pronunciation

The pronunciation is written in English letters, following Georgia’s official romanization. Say every letter: a as in father, e as in pet, i as in machine, o as in port, u as in rule; r is rolled; g is always hard; kh as in Scottish loch; gh a soft gargled g, like a French r; sh as in shop; zh like the s in pleasure; ch as in church; ts as in cats; dz as in adze; j as in jam. An apostrophe marks a “popped” consonant, said with a little click in the throat and no puff of air: k’, p’, t’, ts’, ch’, q’ (q’ is made deep in the throat). Without an apostrophe, k, p, t, ts, ch have a small puff of air. Use the Pronunciation button at the top to hide or show it.

4Grammar and explanations

The future of -ობob verbs: იi- ... -ებeb

Most -ობob verbs form their future with იi- at the start and -ებeb instead of -ობob:

presentfuture
ვცხოვრობvtskhovrob I liveვიცხოვრებvitskhovreb I will live
ვლაპარაკობvlap'arak'ob I speakვილაპარაკებvilap'arak'eb I will speak
ვთამაშობvtamashob I playვითამაშებvitamasheb I will play
ვვარჯიშობvvarjishob I exerciseვივარჯიშებvivarjisheb I will exercise
ვმუშაობvmushaob I workვიმუშავებvimushaveb I will work

ვმუშაობvmushaob adds a ვv: ვიმუშავებvimushaveb.

The endings are the ones you know: ვv-, -სs, -თt, -ენen.

A special one: ვისწავლიvists'avli

ვსწავლობvsts'avlob (I study, I learn) has its own future: ვისწავლიvists'avli, ისწავლიists'avli, ისწავლისists'avlis, ვისწავლითvists'avlit, ისწავლითists'avlit, ისწავლიანists'avlian. Its object still takes -სs in the future: ქართულს ვისწავლიkartuls vists'avli, "I will learn Georgian".

The object in the future

In the future, as in the present, the object keeps -სs: ფეხბურთს ვითამაშებpekhburts vitamasheb, "I'll play football"; ქართულს ვისწავლიkartuls vists'avli, "I'll learn Georgian". The rule: the present and the future share the same cases.

5Good to know

Rugby is one of the most popular sports in Georgia, and the national team has played in every Rugby World Cup since 2003. Georgians also love football (ფეხბურთიpekhburti) and wrestling (ჭიდაობაch'idaoba).

You also met დავურეკავdavurek'av in the dialogue: "I will call (someone)". It comes with the other preverb futures in lesson 62 and the "call" verbs in lesson 106.
