1Limba’s diary

LIMBA

Limba's first night in a ger

I have been at the camp for several days, and I still have not written about my first night in the ger. Here it is.

After the long drive with Bold, Dulmaa gave us hot tea and a bowl of meat, and the stove made the ger as warm as a sauna. I fell asleep at once. At three in the morning I woke up: the fire had gone out and the wind was howling. I have never been so cold.

Then I heard Dulmaa get up in the dark and light the stove again. Five minutes later I was asleep.

2Dialogue

Did you sleep well?
Limba
I did. It was very cold in the night, and the fire went out.
Yes, it was windy in the night. Today is warmer than yesterday.
Limba
Where is Nomin?
After tea she went off on horseback with Ganbaatar.
Limba
Where did they go?
Behind the mountain. Our sheep and goats are grazing there.
Limba
I'd like to go on horseback too.
After the meal, go on the grey horse. It's the calmest.
Limba
Thank you, Grandma. Country life is the best!

4Grammar and explanations

Unit 8 at a glance

This unit took you out of the city. Here is everything it taught, with one example each.

LessonWhat it doesExample
71how you travel: instrumental –
72with whom: comitative –
73where: postpositions after the genitive
75the five kinds of livestock
78comparing with the ablative

Three endings not to mix up

Three of these endings look alike and do very different jobs. Each has its own vowel set, chosen by the word it sits on.

New sentences with the same tools

Бид Болдтой хамт машинаар ирсэн.we Bold-COM together car-INS come-PAST"We came by car with Bold."
Гэрийн хажууд хоёр морь байна.ger-GEN beside two horse be-PRES-FUT"There are two horses next to the ger."
Шөнө өдрөөс хүйтэн.night day-ABL cold"The night is colder than the day."
Оройн хоолны дараа бид ярилцсан.evening-GEN meal-GEN after we talk-PAST"After dinner we talked."
Mongolia-GEN most long river"the longest river in Mongolia"

The genitive does a lot of work

Notice how often the genitive came back in this unit. Postpositions want it (гэрийн ард, хоолны дараа), parts of a landscape want it (уулын орой), and the group of a superlative wants it (Монголын хамгийн том хот). If you are unsure what to put in front of a postposition, the genitive is the best first guess.

Words that change shape

Before an ending, a short vowel can drop out (өдөр → өдрөөс, өчигдөр → өчигдрөөс), морь gives мориор, and уул adds н in ууланд. These are the forms to learn by heart.

5Good to know

In the morning, Mongolians often ask "Did you rest well?" or "Did you sleep well?" The answer repeats the verb: Сайхан амарсан or Сайн унтсан, and you ask back: Та сайхан амарсан уу? In a ger, where everyone has heard the night's wind and the stove, the question is never empty.
