1Limba’s diary

LIMBA

Nomin and her grandmother disagree

Dulmaa has come down from Arkhangai for a week to see a doctor at Saraa's hospital. At dinner the talk turned into a real debate between grandmother and granddaughter.

Dulmaa thinks the countryside is emptying because the young all want to live in the city. Nomin thinks young people simply go where the schools and the jobs are.

I listened and kept quiet for a long time. In the end I said what I really thought: both of them were right.

2Dialogue

Дулмаа
Манай сумын залуус бүгд хот руу явж байна.All the young people of our district are leaving for the city.
Номин
Эмээ, тэд сургууль, ажил хайхаар явж байна шүү дээ.Grandma, they're going to look for schools and work, you know.
Дулмаа
Тэгвэл хөдөө хэн үлдэх вэ? Ахмадууд л үлдэж байна.Then who will stay in the countryside? Only the old people are staying.
Номин
Монгол улс хотжиж байна, эмээ. Энэ бол орчин үеийн өөрчлөлт.Mongolia is becoming urban, Grandma. It's a modern change.
Дулмаа
Урьд нь залуус малаа маллаж, хөдөөдөө амьдардаг байсан.In the old days young people herded their animals and lived in their own countryside.
Номин
Одоо залуус их сургуульд сурдаг болсон. Энэ муу юм уу?Now young people have come to study at university. Is that bad?
Дулмаа
Муу биш. Гэхдээ уламжлалаа мартаж болохгүй.It's not bad. But you mustn't forget your traditions.
Номин
Эмээ, би өөрөөр бодож байна. Хотод ч уламжлал бий.Grandma, I see it differently. There are traditions in the city too.
Limba
Миний бодлоор та хоёулаа зөв.In my opinion you are both right.
Дулмаа
Хотод амьдарсан ч гэсэн нутгаа мартахгүй байх хэрэгтэй.Even if you live in the city, you must not forget your homeland.
Номин
Би нутгаа хэзээ ч мартахгүй, эмээ. Зун бүр ирнэ.I'll never forget our homeland, Grandma. I'll come every summer.
Бат
Харин залуус ахмадаасаа их юм сурдаг шүү.And the young learn a lot from their elders, you know.
Дулмаа
Тийм. Хүн ахтай, дээл захтай гэдэг.Yes. As the saying goes, a person has elders, as a deel has a collar.

4Grammar and explanations

Words for the generations

WordMeaning
залууyoung; a young person
залуусyoung people, the young (as a group)
ахмадelder, senior; ахмадууд, the elders
залуу үе / ахмад үеthe younger / the older generation
орчин үеmodern times; орчин үеийн, modern

залуус is a plural of залуу in –с, and it is the usual word for "the young" in a debate or a newspaper. ахмад is respectful: it means older people as people who deserve respect, never just "old".

хотжих and хотжилт: naming a process

Add –жих to хот (city) and you get a verb, хотжих, "to become city-like, to urbanise". Add –лт, the suffix of lesson 153, and you have the name of the process: хотжилт, urbanisation.

Монгол улс хурдан хотжиж байна.Mongolia is urbanising fast.
Хотжилт бол орчин үеийн өөрчлөлт.Urbanisation is a modern change.

Then and now: –даг байсан against –даг болсон

Lesson 159 gave you –даг байсан, "used to": a habit that belongs to the past. Its partner is –даг болсон, "have come to do": a habit that is new. Put the two side by side and you can describe almost any social change.

Урьд нь залуус хөдөө амьдардаг байсан.before young-PL countryside live-HAB be-PAST"In the past young people used to live in the countryside."
Одоо залуус хотод амьдардаг болсон.now young-PL city-DAT live-HAB become-PAST"Now young people have come to live in the city."

The only change is the last word: байсан says the habit is over, болсон says the habit has begun.

улам: more and more

улам in front of an adjective or a verb of change means "more and more, even more".

Хот улам томорч байна.The city is growing bigger and bigger.

Disagreeing with an elder

With an elder, never say that they are wrong. Say that you see it differently: Би өөрөөр бодож байна, or the more formal Би тантай санал нийлэхгүй байна (lesson 142), and keep та and эмээ. Nomin disagrees with her grandmother all evening and never once loses that tone.

5Good to know

Today almost half of all Mongolians live in Ulaanbaatar. Many families moved to the city after hard winters (зуд, lesson 162) killed their herds, and settled in the ger districts around it.

Dulmaa's proverb, Хүн ахтай, дээл захтай, says that just as every deel has a collar, every person has elders to respect. You will hear it whenever the young and the old disagree, usually said by the old.
