Week 14. A timeline of my life

Tamar asks each of us to draw a timeline of our life on the board and present it in Georgian. Born, school, university, first job, Georgia. Every date needs a little time expression.

Today: words that place events in the past, and the word როცაrotsa, "when".

2Dialogue

Tamar
სემ, როდის ჩამოხვედი საქართველოში?sem, rodis chamokhvedi sakartveloshi?Sam, when did you arrive in Georgia?
Sam
ორი თვის წინ ჩამოვედი.ori tvis ts'in chamovedi.I arrived two months ago.
Tamar
და შარშან სად იყავი?da sharshan sad iq'avi? And where were you last year?
Sam
შარშან მონრეალში ვიყავი, ბანკში ვმუშაობდი.sharshan monrealshi viq'avi, bank'shi vmushaobdi.Last year I was in Montreal, I was working in a bank.
Tamar
როცა ჩამოხვედი, ქართული იცოდი?rotsa chamokhvedi, kartuli itsodi? When you arrived, did you know Georgian?
Sam
არა! როცა ჩამოვედი, მხოლოდ „გამარჯობა“ ვიცოდი.ara! rotsa chamovedi, mkholod „gamarjoba“ vitsodi. No! When I arrived, I only knew "gamarjoba".

მაშინmashinthen, at that time (same word as "then, in that case", lesson 38)
მხოლოდmkholodonly
How to read the pronunciation

The pronunciation is written in English letters, following Georgia’s official romanization. Say every letter: a as in father, e as in pet, i as in machine, o as in port, u as in rule; r is rolled; g is always hard; kh as in Scottish loch; gh a soft gargled g, like a French r; sh as in shop; zh like the s in pleasure; ch as in church; ts as in cats; dz as in adze; j as in jam. An apostrophe marks a “popped” consonant, said with a little click in the throat and no puff of air: k’, p’, t’, ts’, ch’, q’ (q’ is made deep in the throat). Without an apostrophe, k, p, t, ts, ch have a small puff of air. Use the Pronunciation button at the top to hide or show it.

4Grammar and explanations

Words for the past

Georgianmeaning
გუშინgushinyesterday
გუშინწინgushints'inthe day before yesterday
წინა კვირასts'ina k'viraslast week
წინა თვეშიts'ina tveshilast month
შარშანsharshanlast year
ორი დღის წინori dghis ts'intwo days ago
ხუთი წლის წინkhuti ts'lis ts'infive years ago

წინაts'ina ("previous") never changes: წინა კვირასts'ina k'viras, წინა წელსts'ina ts'els. Remember -ის წინis ts'in for "ago" (lesson 53).

When...: როცაrotsa

როდისrodis? asks "when?". In the middle of a sentence, "when" is როცაrotsa (or, more formally, როდესაცrodesats):

როცა ჩამოვედი, ქართული არ ვიცოდი.rotsa chamovedi, kartuli ar vitsodi.when I-arrived, Georgian not I-knewWhen I arrived, I didn't know Georgian.
სახლში ვიყავი, როცა ის მოვიდა.sakhlshi viq'avi, rotsa is movida.home-in I-was, when he cameI was at home when he came.

The როცაrotsa part can come first or second. A comma separates the two parts.

Then: მაშინmashin

მაშინmashin means "then, at that time": მაშინ სტუდენტი ვიყავიmashin st'udent'i viq'avi, "at that time I was a student".

5Good to know

Do not mix up the two "when"s: როდის მოხვედიrodis mokhvedi? (a question: "when did you come?") but როცა მოხვედიrotsa mokhvedi, ... (a statement: "when you came, ..."). English uses one word for both; Georgian has two.

მხოლოდmkholod ("only") goes before the word it limits: მხოლოდ ერთი სიტყვა ვიცოდიmkholod erti sit'q'va vitsodi, "I knew only one word".
