Week 8. My morning routine

Tamar gives us a homework task: describe our morning routine in Georgian. I realise that my mornings in Tbilisi are very different from my mornings in Montreal.

Today: how often, and the little word ხოლმეkholme that turns any verb into a habit.

2Dialogue

Tamar
სემ, დილით რას აკეთებ ხოლმე?sem, dilit ras ak'eteb kholme?Sam, what do you usually do in the morning?
Sam
ყოველ დილას რვა საათზე ვდგები. ჯერ ყავას ვსვამ ხოლმე.q'ovel dilas rva saatze vdgebi. jer q'avas vsvam kholme.Every morning I get up at eight. First I usually drink a coffee.
Tamar

Sam
ხშირად ვსაუზმობ, მაგრამ ზოგჯერ დრო არ მაქვს.khshirad vsauzmob, magram zogjer dro ar makvs.I often have breakfast, but sometimes I don't have time.
Tamar
სპორტს აკეთებ?sp'ort's ak'eteb?Do you do sport?
Sam

How to read the pronunciation

The pronunciation is written in English letters, following Georgia’s official romanization. Say every letter: a as in father, e as in pet, i as in machine, o as in port, u as in rule; r is rolled; g is always hard; kh as in Scottish loch; gh a soft gargled g, like a French r; sh as in shop; zh like the s in pleasure; ch as in church; ts as in cats; dz as in adze; j as in jam. An apostrophe marks a “popped” consonant, said with a little click in the throat and no puff of air: k’, p’, t’, ts’, ch’, q’ (q’ is made deep in the throat). Without an apostrophe, k, p, t, ts, ch have a small puff of air. Use the Pronunciation button at the top to hide or show it.

4Grammar and explanations

How often?

Georgianmeaning
ყოველთვისq'oveltvisalways
ხშირადkhshiradoften
ხანდახან, ზოგჯერkhandakhan, zogjersometimes
იშვიათადishviatadrarely
არასდროს ... არarasdros ... arnever

არასდროსarasdros (also არასოდესarasodes) needs არar before the verb, like არავინaravin and არაფერიaraperi (lesson 24):

არასდროს არ ვვარჯიშობ.arasdros ar vvarjishob.never not I-exerciseI never exercise.

Every ...: ყოველq'ovel + -სs

ყოველიq'oveli (every) loses its -იi before a noun in -სs: ყოველ დილასq'ovel dilas (every morning), ყოველ საღამოსq'ovel saghamos (every evening), ყოველ კვირასq'ovel k'viras (every week).

Habits: -ობითobit

Add -ობითobit to a part of the day for a regular habit: დილაობითdilaobit (in the mornings), საღამოობითsaghamoobit (in the evenings). For the night, simply say ღამითghamit, "at night".

The habit word ხოლმეkholme

ხოლმეkholme after a verb says that something is a habit, "usually, as a rule":

ყავას ვსვამ ხოლმე.q'avas vsvam kholme.coffee I-drink usuallyI usually drink coffee.
კვირას ბებიასთან დავდივართ ხოლმე.k'viras bebiastan davdivart kholme.Sunday Grandma-at we-go usuallyOn Sundays we usually go to Grandma's.

5Good to know

ვდგებიvdgebi means "I get up, I stand up" (in the present). Its partner ვდგავარvdgavar means "I am standing". You will learn all the verbs of standing, sitting and lying in lessons 133 and 134.

ხოლმეkholme is one of those little words that make you sound Georgian: ხოლმეkholme in the right place shows you really know how people speak.
