Week 6. Plans after class

After class, Tamar keeps us for a few minutes to talk about plans: an exam in two weeks, a trip after the exam. Everything she says is full of "after", "before" and "during".

Today: placing actions in time with the genitive.

2Dialogue

How to read the pronunciation

The pronunciation is written in English letters, following Georgia’s official romanization. Say every letter: a as in father, e as in pet, i as in machine, o as in port, u as in rule; r is rolled; g is always hard; kh as in Scottish loch; gh a soft gargled g, like a French r; sh as in shop; zh like the s in pleasure; ch as in church; ts as in cats; dz as in adze; j as in jam. An apostrophe marks a “popped” consonant, said with a little click in the throat and no puff of air: k’, p’, t’, ts’, ch’, q’ (q’ is made deep in the throat). Without an apostrophe, k, p, t, ts, ch have a small puff of air. Use the Pronunciation button at the top to hide or show it.

4Grammar and explanations

Time words after the genitive

These words come after a noun in the -ისis form:

Georgianmeaning
გაკვეთილის შემდეგgak'vetilis shemdegafter the lesson
სადილის წინsadilis ts'inbefore lunch
ჭამის დროსch'amis drosduring the meal
ერთი საათის განმავლობაშიerti saatis ganmavlobashifor one hour, within an hour

მერეmere can replace შემდეგshemdeg in everyday speech: გაკვეთილის მერეgak'vetilis mere.

Ago: წინts'in

With a length of time, წინts'in means "ago": ორი წლის წინori ts'lis ts'in (two years ago), ხუთი წუთის წინkhuti ts'utis ts'in (five minutes ago), ერთი კვირის წინerti k'viris ts'in (a week ago). Note that the number + noun stays singular, and the noun takes -ისis: წლისts'lis, წუთისts'utis, კვირისk'viris.

In (two weeks): -ის შემდეგis shemdeg or -შიshi

"In two weeks" can be ორი კვირის შემდეგori k'viris shemdeg or ორ კვირაშიor k'virashi (lesson 32's -შიshi, after a shortened number). Both are common:

ორ კვირაში გამოცდა გვაქვს.or k'virashi gamotsda gvakvs.two week-in exam we-haveWe have an exam in two weeks.

Before: -მდეmde or -ის წინis ts'in

For "before, until", you also know -მდეmde (lesson 49): სადილამდეsadilamde, "until lunch". სადილის წინsadilis ts'in is "before lunch", just before it.

5Good to know
