Giorgi comes back from the best party of the year, and I wasn't there. Nobody told me, my phone was dead, and now all I can do is imagine.
Today: "if I had known…".
| Georgian | Pronunciation | English |
|---|---|---|
| საოცარი | saotsari | amazing |
| მცოდნოდა | mtsodnoda | (if) I had known |
| მოვიდოდი | movidodi | I would come; I would have come |
| გენახა | genakha | (if) you had seen |
| ენახა | enakha | (if) he/she had seen |
| ვყოფილიყავი | vq'opiliq'avi | (if) I had been |
| პირობას გაძლევ | p'irobas gadzlev | I promise you (literally "I give you my word") |
The pronunciation is written in English letters, following Georgia’s official romanization. Say every letter: a as in father, e as in pet, i as in machine, o as in port, u as in rule; r is rolled; g is always hard; kh as in Scottish loch; gh a soft gargled g, like a French r; sh as in shop; zh like the s in pleasure; ch as in church; ts as in cats; dz as in adze; j as in jam. An apostrophe marks a “popped” consonant, said with a little click in the throat and no puff of air: k’, p’, t’, ts’, ch’, q’ (q’ is made deep in the throat). Without an apostrophe, k, p, t, ts, ch have a small puff of air. Use the Pronunciation button at the top to hide or show it.
| "if" clause (pluperfect) | main clause (conditional) |
|---|---|
| რომ მცოდნოდა,rom mtsodnoda, | მოვიდოდი.movidodi. |
| If I had known, | I would have come. |
| ტელეფონი რომ გენახა,t'eleponi rom genakha, | შეტყობინებას წაიკითხავდი.shet'q'obinebas ts'aik'itkhavdi. |
| If you had looked at your phone, | you'd have read the message. |
| რომ ენახა,rom enakha, | გაიცინებდა.gaitsinebda. |
| If she had seen it, | she would have laughed. |
The conditional (მოვიდოდიmovidodi) means both "I would come" and "I would have come": the "if" clause tells you which.
| present | pluperfect after რომrom |
|---|---|
| ვიციvitsi | მცოდნოდაmtsodnoda (if I had known) |
| მაქვსmakvs | მქონოდაmkonoda (if I had had) |
| მყავსmq'avs | მყოლოდაmq'oloda (if I had had: people, cars) |
| ვარvar | ვყოფილიყავიvq'opiliq'avi (if I had been) |
The official B2 grammar uses the pluperfect for a dream that cannot come true: რა კარგი იქნებოდაra k'argi ikneboda, დიდი სახლი რომ მქონოდაdidi sakhli rom mkonoda (how nice it would be to have a big house).
Compare three "if"s: თუ მოხვალtu mokhval (if you come: real), რომ მოხვიდეrom mokhvide (if you came: unreal now) and რომ მოსულიყავიrom mosuliq'avi (if you had come: unreal past). The further from reality, the deeper into the verb system.
