Before I leave for a hike, Bebo gives me her warnings, one after the other, like a list of commandments. Some are gentle, some are very serious.
Today: the second way of saying "don't".
| Georgian | Pronunciation | English |
|---|---|---|
| მარტო | mart'o | alone |
| არ დაგავიწყდეს! | ar dagavits'q'des! | don't forget! |
| არ დამავიწყდება | ar damavits'q'deba | I won't forget |
| არ ინერვიულო! | ar inerviulo! | don't worry! (to a friend) |
| ნისლი | nisli | fog |
| იარო | iaro | that you walk (optative) |
| ყველაფერი კარგად იქნება | q'velaperi k'argad ikneba | everything will be fine |
The pronunciation is written in English letters, following Georgia’s official romanization. Say every letter: a as in father, e as in pet, i as in machine, o as in port, u as in rule; r is rolled; g is always hard; kh as in Scottish loch; gh a soft gargled g, like a French r; sh as in shop; zh like the s in pleasure; ch as in church; ts as in cats; dz as in adze; j as in jam. An apostrophe marks a “popped” consonant, said with a little click in the throat and no puff of air: k’, p’, t’, ts’, ch’, q’ (q’ is made deep in the throat). Without an apostrophe, k, p, t, ts, ch have a small puff of air. Use the Pronunciation button at the top to hide or show it.
არar before the optative is a clear, often serious "don't":
| optative (you) | don't! |
|---|---|
| წახვიდეts'akhvide | არ წახვიდეar ts'akhvide! don't go! |
| გააკეთოgaak'eto | არ გააკეთოar gaak'eto! don't do it! |
| დალიოdalio | არ დალიოar dalio! don't drink (it)! |
| დაბრუნდეdabrunde | არ დაბრუნდეar dabrunde! don't come back! |
| ინერვიულოinerviulo | არ ინერვიულოar inerviulo! don't worry! |
With თქვენtkven, add -თt: არ წახვიდეთar ts'akhvidet!, არ ინერვიულოთar inerviulot!
| ნუnu + present / future | არar + optative |
|---|---|
| a general or friendly "don't" | a firm "don't", often about one specific action |
| ნუ ღელავnu ghelav! don't worry | არ ინერვიულოar inerviulo! don't worry |
| ნუ ლაპარაკობnu lap'arak'ob! stop talking | არ თქვაar tkva! don't say it! |
In everyday speech, both are very common, and often they are interchangeable.
"To forget" in Georgian works like მინდაminda: the person is shown at the start, and the thing forgotten is the subject. არ დაგავიწყდესar dagavits'q'des! is literally "let it not be forgotten by you!":
The official grammar for learners gives არ შეჩერდეar shecherde, არ წახვიდეar ts'akhvide, არ გააკეთოar gaak'eto as A1 examples of "don't": they are among the first commands Georgian children hear.
