Week 22. Gergeti church under Mount Kazbek

The road north from Tbilisi climbs for three hours into the Greater Caucasus. At the end: the village of Stepantsminda, and high above it, alone on a green hill under the snows of Mount Kazbek, the Gergeti church.

This is the end of level A2. Read the story, review the tables, and take the test: 70% means you are ready for B1.

How to read the pronunciation

The pronunciation is written in English letters, following Georgia’s official romanization. Say every letter: a as in father, e as in pet, i as in machine, o as in port, u as in rule; r is rolled; g is always hard; kh as in Scottish loch; gh a soft gargled g, like a French r; sh as in shop; zh like the s in pleasure; ch as in church; ts as in cats; dz as in adze; j as in jam. An apostrophe marks a “popped” consonant, said with a little click in the throat and no puff of air: k’, p’, t’, ts’, ch’, q’ (q’ is made deep in the throat). Without an apostrophe, k, p, t, ts, ch have a small puff of air. Use the Pronunciation button at the top to hide or show it.

5Good to know

The Gergeti Trinity Church, გერგეტის სამებაgerget'is sameba, was built in the 14th century on a hill above the village of Stepantsminda, at the foot of Mount Kazbek, which rises to more than 5,000 metres. The road from Tbilisi, the old Georgian Military Road, crosses the Jvari Pass and is one of the most beautiful roads in the Caucasus.

Congratulations on finishing A2! At B1 you will learn to put "me" and "you" inside the verb, to link long sentences, and to talk about experience with the perfect.
