Week 16. Homework done!

Monday morning, class. Tamar collects the homework: I wrote a text, read the story and even prepared a list of new words. For once, I can say it all in the past, and in correct Georgian.

Today: the past of verbs that do something, and the surprise that comes with it.

2Dialogue

Tamar
სემ, დავალება გააკეთე?sem, davaleba gaak'ete?Sam, did you do your homework?
Sam
დიახ, გავაკეთე! ტექსტი დავწერე და მოთხრობა წავიკითხე.diakh, gavak'ete! t'ekst'i davts'ere da motkhroba ts'avik'itkhe.Yes, I did! I wrote the text and read the story.

How to read the pronunciation

The pronunciation is written in English letters, following Georgia’s official romanization. Say every letter: a as in father, e as in pet, i as in machine, o as in port, u as in rule; r is rolled; g is always hard; kh as in Scottish loch; gh a soft gargled g, like a French r; sh as in shop; zh like the s in pleasure; ch as in church; ts as in cats; dz as in adze; j as in jam. An apostrophe marks a “popped” consonant, said with a little click in the throat and no puff of air: k’, p’, t’, ts’, ch’, q’ (q’ is made deep in the throat). Without an apostrophe, k, p, t, ts, ch have a small puff of air. Use the Pronunciation button at the top to hide or show it.

4Grammar and explanations

The past of "write", "do", "read"

The past (the aorist) uses the same preverb as the future (lesson 62) and new endings:

personwritedoread
მეmeდავწერეdavts'ereგავაკეთეgavak'eteწავიკითხეts'avik'itkhe
შენshenდაწერეdats'ereგააკეთეgaak'eteწაიკითხეts'aik'itkhe
ის (მან)is (man)დაწერაdats'eraგააკეთაgaak'etaწაიკითხაts'aik'itkha
ჩვენchvenდავწერეთdavts'eretგავაკეთეთgavak'etetწავიკითხეთts'avik'itkhet
თქვენtkvenდაწერეთdats'eretგააკეთეთgaak'etetწაიკითხეთts'aik'itkhet
ისინი (მათ)isini (mat)დაწერესdats'eresგააკეთესgaak'etesწაიკითხესts'aik'itkhes

The endings: -ეe for I and you, -აa for he, she, -ეთet for we and you (plural), -ესes for they.

The big switch

In the present and the future, the doer is in the basic form and the object takes -სs. In this past, it is the other way round: the doer takes -მაma / -მm and the object goes back to its basic form:

doerobjectverb
presentნინოninoწერილსts'erilsწერსts'ers
futureნინოninoწერილსts'erilsდაწერსdats'ers
pastნინომninomწერილიts'eriliდაწერაdats'era
ნინომ წერილი დაწერა.ninom ts'erili dats'era.Nino-ERG letter wroteNino wrote a letter.
მე ტექსტი დავწერე.me t'ekst'i davts'ere.I text wroteI wrote a text.

This "switch" is called ergativity, and it is the heart of Georgian grammar. Take your time with it: everything else in the past depends on it.

5Good to know

A good way to remember the switch: in the past, the doer is "marked" (-მაma) and the thing is "free" (basic form). Say these pairs aloud: ნინო წერილს წერსnino ts'erils ts'ers / ნინომ წერილი დაწერაninom ts'erili dats'era; ბავშვი სურათს ხატავსbavshvi surats khat'avs / ბავშვმა სურათი დახატაbavshvma surati dakhat'a.

The question გააკეთეgaak'ete? ("did you do it?") is also a perfect way to ask about any task: გააკეთეgaak'ete? კიk'i, გავაკეთეgavak'ete!
