Day 22. Planning the year

Nino and I plan the coming year: when to see the snow in the mountains, when the grapes are harvested, when the sea is warm enough in Batumi.

Today: months, dates and the four seasons, with a little rule that even Georgians find funny.

How to read the pronunciation

The pronunciation is written in English letters, following Georgia’s official romanization. Say every letter: a as in father, e as in pet, i as in machine, o as in port, u as in rule; r is rolled; g is always hard; kh as in Scottish loch; gh a soft gargled g, like a French r; sh as in shop; zh like the s in pleasure; ch as in church; ts as in cats; dz as in adze; j as in jam. An apostrophe marks a “popped” consonant, said with a little click in the throat and no puff of air: k’, p’, t’, ts’, ch’, q’ (q’ is made deep in the throat). Without an apostrophe, k, p, t, ts, ch have a small puff of air. Use the Pronunciation button at the top to hide or show it.

4Grammar and explanations

In a month: -შიshi

"In March" is მარტშიmart'shi, "in August" აგვისტოშიagvist'oshi: the same -შიshi as for places.

The seasons: -შიshi and -ზეze

Two seasons take -შიshi and two take -ზეze. The official Georgian grammar for learners puts it simply: the "main" seasons take -შიshi, the "transition" seasons take -ზეze.

ზამთარიzamtari winterზამთარშიzamtarshi
გაზაფხულიgazapkhuli springგაზაფხულზეgazapkhulze
შემოდგომაshemodgoma autumnშემოდგომაზეshemodgomaze

Dates: number + month + -სs

A date is the number (shortened, without its -იi) + the month with -სs:

სამ სექტემბერსsam sekt'embersthree September-onon 3 September
რვა მარტსrva mart'seight March-onon 8 March
პირველ მაისსp'irvel maissfirst May-onon 1 May

The first day of a month uses "first": პირველი მაისიp'irveli maisi is 1 May.

When is it? როდისააrodisaa?

როდისrodis + -აa: დაბადების დღე როდისააdabadebis dghe rodisaa? "When is the birthday?"

5Good to know

რთველიrtveli, the grape harvest, is one of the great moments of the Georgian year, above all in the wine region of Kakheti, in the east. Families and friends pick the grapes together, and the day ends at a big table.

The names of the months came into Georgian from Latin, through Greek, so მარტიmart'i, მაისიmaisi, ივლისიivlisi or ოქტომბერიokt'omberi are easy to recognise. The days of the week, as you saw in lesson 41, are much more Georgian.
