Day 21. The calendar on the fridge

On the fridge, Manana keeps a big calendar where everybody writes their plans: Giorgi's rugby, Nino's lessons, Bebo's doctor. Today she adds a new column: Sam.

Today: the days of the week, and "to be" in the past and the future.

How to read the pronunciation

The pronunciation is written in English letters, following Georgia’s official romanization. Say every letter: a as in father, e as in pet, i as in machine, o as in port, u as in rule; r is rolled; g is always hard; kh as in Scottish loch; gh a soft gargled g, like a French r; sh as in shop; zh like the s in pleasure; ch as in church; ts as in cats; dz as in adze; j as in jam. An apostrophe marks a “popped” consonant, said with a little click in the throat and no puff of air: k’, p’, t’, ts’, ch’, q’ (q’ is made deep in the throat). Without an apostrophe, k, p, t, ts, ch have a small puff of air. Use the Pronunciation button at the top to hide or show it.

4Grammar and explanations

The days of the week

The days from Monday to Thursday contain a number and the word შაბათიshabati (Saturday): ორ-შაბათიor-shabati (Monday: "two"), სამ-შაბათიsam-shabati (Tuesday: "three"), ოთხ-შაბათიotkh-shabati (Wednesday: "four"), ხუთ-შაბათიkhut-shabati (Thursday: "five"). პარასკევიp'arask'evi (Friday) and კვირაk'vira (Sunday) come from Greek. კვირაk'vira also means "week".

On Monday: -სs

To say "on Monday", add -სs (the dative ending you know from objects): ორშაბათსorshabats, შაბათსshabats, კვირასk'viras. The same ending works for parts of the day: საღამოსsaghamos (in the evening).

შაბათს ბაზარში მივდივარ.shabats bazarshi mivdivar.Saturday-on market-to I-goOn Saturday I go to the market.

With someone: -თან ერთადtan ertad

ერთადertad means "together". After a person with -თანtan, it means "with": ნინოსთან ერთადninostan ertad, "with Nino", დედასთან ერთადdedastan ertad, "with Mother".

5Good to know

დღეს რა დღეაdghes ra dghea? is a nice little play on words: დღესdghes is "today" and დღეdghe is "day", so the question means "today what day is it?".

Mtskheta, the old capital of Georgia, is about twenty kilometres from Tbilisi. Its churches are a UNESCO World Heritage site, and it is the most popular day trip from the capital. You will go there with Sam in lesson 70.
