1Sam’s diary

ძაღლი მყავს
ძაღლი მყავსdzaghli mq'avs

Day 15. Meet Bubu, the family dog

Meet Bubu, the family dog: big, brown, lazy, and convinced that every visitor has come to see him. Giorgi asks me if I have a dog in Canada.

Today: "to have". Georgian has two verbs for it, one for things and one for living beings.

2Dialogue

Giorgi
სემ, ძაღლი გყავს?sem, dzaghli gq'avs?Sam, do you have a dog?
Sam
არა, ძაღლი არ მყავს. კატა მყავს.ara, dzaghli ar mq'avs. k'at'a mq'avs.No, I don't have a dog. I have a cat.

How to read the pronunciation

The pronunciation is written in English letters, following Georgia’s official romanization. Say every letter: a as in father, e as in pet, i as in machine, o as in port, u as in rule; r is rolled; g is always hard; kh as in Scottish loch; gh a soft gargled g, like a French r; sh as in shop; zh like the s in pleasure; ch as in church; ts as in cats; dz as in adze; j as in jam. An apostrophe marks a “popped” consonant, said with a little click in the throat and no puff of air: k’, p’, t’, ts’, ch’, q’ (q’ is made deep in the throat). Without an apostrophe, k, p, t, ts, ch have a small puff of air. Use the Pronunciation button at the top to hide or show it.

4Grammar and explanations

Two verbs for "to have"

Georgian asks: is the thing you have alive? For people and animals, use მყავსmq'avs. For everything else, use მაქვსmakvs.

thingspeople, animals
I haveმაქვსmakvsმყავსmq'avs
you haveგაქვსgakvsგყავსgq'avs

ძაღლი მყავს.dzaghli mq'avs.dog I-haveI have a dog.
ორი შვილი ჰყავს.ori shvili hq'avs.two child she-hasShe has two children.

The person is at the start of the verb

As with მქვიაmkvia (lesson 11), the owner is shown by the first letter of the verb: მm- me, გg- you, გვgv- us. The thing you have is the subject, and it stays in its basic form: მანქანა მაქვსmankana makvs, ძმა მყავსdzma mq'avs.

Questions and "not"

ძმა გყავს?dzma gq'avs?brother you-haveDo you have a brother?
არ მყავს.ar mq'avs.not I-haveI don't (have one).
დრო არ მაქვს.dro ar makvs.time not I-haveI don't have time.

5Good to know

To say "I have a cold" or "I have a fever", Georgian also uses მაქვსmakvs: სიცხე მაქვსsitskhe makvs, "I have a temperature". You will need it at the doctor's (lesson 97).

Living beings are always მყავსmq'avs, even small ones: კატა მყავსk'at'a mq'avs, თევზი მყავსtevzi mq'avs (I have a fish, as a pet). Fish you are going to eat, however, are თევზი მაქვსtevzi makvs!
