1Sam’s diary

Day 14. Which bus do I take?

I want to go to the old town by bus, and Levan tells me: "Take bus thirty-seven." Thirty-seven in Georgian is "twenty and seventeen". I have to stop and think every time.

Today: numbers up to one hundred, counted in twenties.

How to read the pronunciation

The pronunciation is written in English letters, following Georgia’s official romanization. Say every letter: a as in father, e as in pet, i as in machine, o as in port, u as in rule; r is rolled; g is always hard; kh as in Scottish loch; gh a soft gargled g, like a French r; sh as in shop; zh like the s in pleasure; ch as in church; ts as in cats; dz as in adze; j as in jam. An apostrophe marks a “popped” consonant, said with a little click in the throat and no puff of air: k’, p’, t’, ts’, ch’, q’ (q’ is made deep in the throat). Without an apostrophe, k, p, t, ts, ch have a small puff of air. Use the Pronunciation button at the top to hide or show it.

19 ცხრამეტი19 tskhramet'i20 ოცი20 otsi

Most of them end in -მეტიmet'i, "more": they are "one more than ten", "two more than ten", and so on.

Counting in twenties

Georgian counts by twenties, like French "quatre-vingts":

numberGeorgianliterally
20ოციotsitwenty
40ორმოციormotsitwo twenties
60სამოციsamotsithree twenties
80ოთხმოციotkhmotsifour twenties
100ასიasihundred

The numbers in between: -დაda-

For any other number, take the twenty, add -დაda- ("and") and a number from 1 to 19:

numberGeorgianliterally
21ოცდაერთიotsdaertitwenty and one
30ოცდაათიotsdaatitwenty and ten
37ოცდაჩვიდმეტიotsdachvidmet'itwenty and seventeen
50ორმოცდაათიormotsdaatiforty and ten
75სამოცდათხუთმეტიsamotsdatkhutmet'isixty and fifteen
99ოთხმოცდაცხრამეტიotkhmotsdatskhramet'ieighty and nineteen

Notice that the twenty loses its final -იi before -დაda-: ოციotsi → ოცდაotsda..., ორმოციormotsi → ორმოცდაormotsda...

Which? რომელიromeli?

რომელიromeli? asks "which one?": რომელი ავტობუსიromeli avt'obusi? "which bus?". The answer is just the number.

5Good to know

A trick for big numbers: first find the twenty (20, 40, 60 or 80), then the rest from 1 to 19. For 58: 40 + 18 = ორმოცდათვრამეტიormotsdatvramet'i. For 93: 80 + 13 = ოთხმოცდაცამეტიotkhmotsdatsamet'i.

In Tbilisi you pay for buses and the metro with a transport card or a bank card at the reader. Check the current fare when you travel: prices change.
