Grammar

1. "They" for people in general

To explain how something is done, Palestinian Arabic uses the b-present with "they" and no subject. Nobody in particular is meant: bilaʾʾṭu z-zētūn is "they pick the olives", that is "people pick olives" or "olives are picked". English often says "you", "people" or uses the passive.

Verb"they" (b-present)Meaning
laʾʾaṭ / ylaʾʾeṭbilaʾʾṭuthey pick
ḍarab / yuḍrobbuḍrobuthey knock down
jamaʿ / yijmaʿbijmaʿuthey gather
ʿaṣar / yuʿṣorbuʿṣoruthey press
farash / yufroshbufroshuthey spread out
ʿabba / yʿabbibiʿabbuthey fill

The endings are those of lesson 23: -u for "they". In verbs like laʾʾaṭ, the e of the stem drops before -u: bilaʾʾeṭ "he picks", bilaʾʾṭu "they pick".

kīf bilaʾʾṭu z-zētūn? How are olives picked?
fil-maʿṣara buʿṣoru z-zētūn. At the press, the olives are pressed.
biʿabbu z-zēt fi tanakāt. The oil is put into cans.

2. "It" at the end of the verb

zētūn is a masculine word, so "them" (the olives) is "him" in Arabic. After -u, "him" is a long ū: buḍrobū "they knock them down", buʿṣorū "they press them" (lesson 54).

3. Steps in order

Put the steps in order with words you know: awwal ishi "first", baʿdēn "then", baʿd ma "after", bil-ākher "finally".

awwal ishi bufroshu ḥrāmāt, baʿdēn bilaʾʾṭu z-zētūn. First they spread blankets, then they pick the olives.

When you are one of the people doing it, use "we": binlaʾʾeṭ, bnākhdo ʿal-maʿṣara.
