Grammar

1. I speak, you speak

This is the b-present, the everyday present tense. It starts with b-, and the next letters show who does the action. Here is ḥaka / yiḥki "to speak":

WhoPalestinian ArabicEnglish
Iana baḥkiI speak
you (to a man)inte btiḥkiyou speak
you (to a woman)inti btiḥkiyou speak
hehuwwe biḥkihe speaks
shehiyye btiḥkishe speaks

"You" and "she" sound the same: btiḥki. The language comes right after the verb, with no "the". A question is just a rising voice.

btiḥki inglīzi? Do you speak English?
Līna btiḥki ʿarabi. Lina speaks Arabic.

2. Phrases that save you

Palestinian ArabicEnglish
mish fāhem / mish fāhmeI don't understand (a man / a woman)
mumkin tʿīd? / mumkin tʿīdi?Could you repeat? (to a man / to a woman)
shwayy shwayyslowly
shu yaʿni …?What does … mean?
kīf bitʾūl … bil-ʿarabi?How do you say … in Arabic?

fāhem is not a verb in the b-present, so it takes mish, like mish mabsūṭ. "In Arabic" is bil-ʿarabi, "in English" bil-inglīzi.

Sounds: ʿ in ʿarabi is the voiced throat sound; ḥ in baḥki is a strong, breathy h.
