Giorgi shows me old Tbilisi the way a local walks it: up to the fortress, down to the river, across the bridge, into a church, out again, down to the baths.
Today: go and come, in every direction and every tense.
| Georgian | Pronunciation | English |
|---|---|---|
| ნარიყალა | nariq'ala | Narikala (the old fortress of Tbilisi) |
| ადი! | adi! | go up! |
| დადის | dadis | goes (regularly), goes around |
| გაღმა | gaghma | on the other side, across |
| გადავიდეთ | gadavidet | let's cross |
| აბანოები | abanoebi | (sulphur) baths |
| სადაც გინდა | sadats ginda | wherever you like |
The pronunciation is written in English letters, following Georgia’s official romanization. Say every letter: a as in father, e as in pet, i as in machine, o as in port, u as in rule; r is rolled; g is always hard; kh as in Scottish loch; gh a soft gargled g, like a French r; sh as in shop; zh like the s in pleasure; ch as in church; ts as in cats; dz as in adze; j as in jam. An apostrophe marks a “popped” consonant, said with a little click in the throat and no puff of air: k’, p’, t’, ts’, ch’, q’ (q’ is made deep in the throat). Without an apostrophe, k, p, t, ts, ch have a small puff of air. Use the Pronunciation button at the top to hide or show it.
The verb "go / come" changes its root by series (-დიdi- / -ვალval- / -ვიდvid- / -სულsul-), and its preverb gives the direction. The -მოmo- forms point towards the speaker ("here").
| preverb | present | future | aorist | perfect | command |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| მიmi- (to there) | მიდისmidis | მივაmiva | მივიდაmivida | მისულაmisula | მიდი!midi! |
| მოmo- (to here) | მოდისmodis | მოვაmova | მოვიდაmovida | მოსულაmosula | მოდი!modi! |
| ა- (up)a- (up) | ადისadis | ავაava | ავიდაavida | ასულაasula | ადი!adi! |
| ჩაcha- (down) | ჩადისchadis | ჩავაchava | ჩავიდაchavida | ჩასულაchasula | ჩადი!chadi! |
| შე- (in)she- (in) | შედისshedis | შევაsheva | შევიდაshevida | შესულაshesula | შედი!shedi! |
| გაga- (out) | გადისgadis | გავაgava | გავიდაgavida | გასულაgasula | გადი!gadi! |
| გადაgada- (across) | გადადისgadadis | გადავაgadava | გადავიდაgadavida | გადასულაgadasula | გადადი!gadadi! |
| წაts'a- (away) | მიდისmidis | წავაts'ava | წავიდაts'avida | წასულაts'asula | წადი!ts'adi! |
The "here" partners: ამოდისamodis (comes up), ჩამოდისchamodis (comes down; arrives in town), შემოდისshemodis (comes in), გამოდისgamodis (comes out), გადმოდისgadmodis (comes across), წამოვაts'amova (will come along).
დადისdadis (no direction) means "goes around, goes regularly": სკოლაში დადისsk'olashi dadis (goes to school).
With the optative "we" form: წავიდეთts'avidet! (let's go), ავიდეთavidet! (let's go up), ჩავიდეთchavidet! (let's go down), შევიდეთshevidet! (let's go in), გადავიდეთgadavidet! (let's cross).
The cable car from Rike Park takes you up to Narikala, the fortress above old Tbilisi. Below, in Abanotubani, the domed sulphur baths gave the city its name: თბილიtbili means "warm".
