I'm sending a parcel of Georgian treats to my parents in Canada. At the post office, the clerk wants to see everything I put inside.
Today: show, bring and send.
| Georgian | Pronunciation | English |
|---|---|---|
| ამანათი | amanati | parcel |
| გავგზავნო | gavgzavno | (that) I send |
| მაჩვენეთ! | machvenet! | show me! (polite) |
| ვუგზავნი | vugzavni | I'm sending (it) to him/her |
| გაგზავნე? | gagzavne? | did you send (it)? |
| გამომიგზავნის | gamomigzavnis | he/she will send me |
| გაჩვენებ | gachveneb | I'll show you |
| მოვიტან | movit'an | I'll bring (it) |
| გამოგიგზავნი | gamogigzavni | I'll send you |
| მომიტანე! | momit'ane! | bring me…! |
The pronunciation is written in English letters, following Georgia’s official romanization. Say every letter: a as in father, e as in pet, i as in machine, o as in port, u as in rule; r is rolled; g is always hard; kh as in Scottish loch; gh a soft gargled g, like a French r; sh as in shop; zh like the s in pleasure; ch as in church; ts as in cats; dz as in adze; j as in jam. An apostrophe marks a “popped” consonant, said with a little click in the throat and no puff of air: k’, p’, t’, ts’, ch’, q’ (q’ is made deep in the throat). Without an apostrophe, k, p, t, ts, ch have a small puff of air. Use the Pronunciation button at the top to hide or show it.
"Show" has the same form in the present and the future:
| present and future | aorist | command |
|---|---|---|
| ვაჩვენებvachveneb I show him | ვაჩვენეvachvene I showed him | აჩვენეachvene! show him! |
| მაჩვენებსmachvenebs he shows me | მაჩვენაmachvena he showed me | მაჩვენეmachvene! show me! |
| გაჩვენებgachveneb I show you | გაჩვენეgachvene I showed you |
| present | future | aorist |
|---|---|---|
| ვგზავნიvgzavni I send | გავგზავნიgavgzavni I'll send | გავგზავნეgavgzavne I sent |
| ვუგზავნიvugzavni I send him | გავუგზავნიgavugzavni I'll send him | გავუგზავნეgavugzavne I sent him |
| გიგზავნიgigzavni I send you | გამოგიგზავნიgamogigzavni I'll send you | გამოგიგზავნეgamogigzavne I sent you |
| მიგზავნისmigzavnis he sends me | გამომიგზავნისgamomigzavnis he'll send me | გამომიგზავნაgamomigzavna he sent me |
Commands: გამომიგზავნეgamomigzavne! (send me…!), გაუგზავნეgaugzavne! (send it to him/her!). When the parcel travels towards me or you, the preverb გაga- becomes გამოgamo- ("out here, towards us").
| present | future | aorist |
|---|---|---|
| მომაქვსmomakvs I'm bringing | მოვიტანmovit'an I'll bring | მოვიტანეmovit'ane I brought |
| მოაქვსmoakvs he's bringing | მოიტანსmoit'ans he'll bring | მოიტანაmoit'ana he brought |
| მოგიტანmogit'an I'll bring you | მომიტანაmomit'ana he brought me |
Commands: მოიტანეmoit'ane! (bring it!), მომიტანეmomit'ane! (bring me…!). The present is built like მაქვსmakvs (I have): მომაქვსmomakvs, მოგაქვსmogakvs, მოაქვსmoakvs.
For people and animals, Georgian uses another verb, მოიყვანსmoiq'vans: მეგობარს მოვიყვანmegobars moviq'van (I'll bring a friend), just as it says მაქვსmakvs for things and მყავსmq'avs for people.
The official B1 grammar lists the preverbs that point "towards here": მოmo-, ამოamo-, ჩამოchamo-, შემოshemo-, გამოgamo-, გადმოgadmo-, წამოts'amo-. You know many of them from the verbs of motion (შემოდიshemodi! come in!); they work the same way with "send": გამოგიგზავნიgamogigzavni.
