Declension in Mongolian | Learn Mongolian Language

The declensions represent a fundamental element of the Mongolian language as in many other languages. This principle dictates that the end of a word changes ending about its function in the sentence. Those of you who have learned Latin, German, or Russian will recognize this unique process. In these languages, the final of the word is determined by complex rules related to the, the function, the gended and number of the word. When particles with separate meanings are applied to any noun to distinguish its sense, it is called case. Cases have three things: place of use, determining question and particle. There are 7 distinc cases in Mongolian language.

The Mongolian language has seven (7) cases, which are briefly studied down here. In the examples cited, you will see how the principle of vowel harmony conditions the affixing of suffixes.

Here is the word for "house" or "yurt" in Mongolian

- гэр (house, yurt) is at nominative case (subject function),

- гэрээс (from home, from the yurt) in the ablative case, it shows the origin of an action or a thing

- гэртэй (with the hous, the yurt) in the comitative case (indicates the notion of "with")

- гэрээр (by the house, by the yurt) to the instrumental case, indicates the mean

- гэрийн from home) in the genitive case, noun complement

- гэрийг (house) accusative or direct object case,

- гэрт (at home, in the yurt) in the dative-locative.

Note that the Mongolian does not have a masculine or feminine gender as in many other languages such as french, russian or spanish. Also, it noted that the plural mark inscribed very rarely. These two facts mean that the variations are governed solely by the principle of vocal harmony. It greatly facilitates the learning of Mongolian.
